Karin Jean Setterquist, a remarkable woman whose life was marked by her passion for music and dedication to the education of others, passed away peacefully on September 11, 2025, in
Virginia Beach, VA, at the age of 80. Born on March 30, 1945, in Rockford, IL, Karin lived a life full of love, creativity, and service.
A proud graduate of E. Rockford High School in 1963, Karin pursued higher education with vigor, earning her Bachelor's Degree in Education from the University of Wisconsin La Crosse, followed by a Master's Degree from Northern Illinois University in DeKalb. Her commitment to learning and teaching paved the way for a career that touched many lives.
Karin owned and operated a guitar studio, where she shared her profound love of music with her students, inspiring them to not only play but also to appreciate the beauty and transformative power of music. Her dedication to education extended beyond music as she taught special education in Virginia Beach, impacting countless young lives with her compassion and expertise.
Her interests were as diverse as her talents. Karin loved spending time with her family and friends, creating cherished memories and nurturing bonds that spanned decades. Her warmth and generosity of spirit left an indelible mark on everyone who had the privilege of knowing her.
For over 40 years, Karin made her home in
Virginia Beach, VA, living alongside her beloved cousin, Nancy Friberg York. Their close relationship was a testament to the enduring strength of family ties.
Karin was preceded in death by her parents, Donald Setterquist and Virginia Friberg Setterquist, as well as her brother, Jerry Setterquist. She is survived by her brother, Allen Setterquist; nieces and nephews, Theresa Setterquist James, Michael Setterquist (Nikki), Allyson Setterquist Torres (Paul), Michelle Setterquist Cimino (Tom), and Matthew Setterquist (Jamie), and cousin, Nancy Friberg York, along with 10 great nieces and nephews. Karin's presence will be profoundly missed, but her legacy will continue through the lives she touched and the music she loved.
Services for Karin will be held at a later date at Bayside Baptist Church, allowing those closest to her a moment of reflection and remembrance.
