Karl "Bill" William Abbink, age 89, beloved husband of the late Violet "Vi" Marie Berens, of Crystal Lake, IL, passed away on December 29, 2015, surrounded by his loved ones.
He served in the United States Navy Construction Battalion during World War II. Bill was a founding member and volunteer paramedic for the Lakes Region Rescue Squad which later became part of the McHenry Area Rescue Squad. Bill was a lineman and foreman at Illinois Bell before retiring after nearly 40 years of service. During his retirement, he worked as a school bus driver and carpenter. He was a member, and past president, of the VFW Post 4600.
Bill is survived by his four daughters, Linda (John) Mazur, Connie (Bruce) Bennett, Judy (Pat) Gertz, Terri (Pete) Nietzel; five grandchildren, Adam Gertz, Jodi (Andy) Pierre, Makayla Nietzel, Isabella Nietzel, Michael Nietzel; and his sister Dorothy (Rick) Harbour.
In addition to his parents and six siblings, Bill is preceded in death by his beloved wife Vi.
Friends and neighbors may gather from 9 a.m. until 11 a.m. Saturday, January 2, 2016, at the Church of Holy Apostles, 5211 W. Bull Valley Road, McHenry, IL 60050. The funeral Mass will be at 11 a.m. at the church.
Inurnment will be in the Church of Holy Apostles Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, his family suggests memorials to Honor Flight or any charity of your choice.
