Karl Rettig, beloved husband of Dorothy for 72 years, passed peacefully on September 1, 2025 in Boca Raton, Florida at the age of 96. He was born on February 7, 1929, in Berlin, Germany, and escaped the Holocaust in 1934 with his family.

A proud United States Army Veteran, Karl served during the Korean Conflict as a tank commander and had proudly attained the rank of sergeant first class. After his military service, Karl had a long and varied series of careers, most well known for being a shoe repairman extraordinaire.

He had a passion for crafts, and he was known for his wood carving, scroll sawing, stained glass (for which he taught a class), painting, photography (including developing) and green thumb (Orchids and African Violets). He became a master craftsman at chip carving, which is truly a dying art form.  He freely gave of his crafts to all who knew him.  As his granddaughter Ashley said, “We can never forget him.  He is in every room of our house.”

He was a long-term member of Temple Menorah Keneseth Chai, where he served as president of the Men’s Club. He was also a Cubmaster of Troop 356 in Philadelphia.

Karl is survived by his loving wife, Dorothy, his two sons Richard (Cindy) and Len,  grandchildren Jordan (Sarah) and Ashley Brenner (Marc), a beloved great granddaughter Maddyn, sister-in-law Sandy, and a multitude of nieces and nephews. Dorothy and Karl were well known at their senior living retirement community Veranda Club in Boca for their devoted love, and they slow-danced to their song, “Because of You” up until a few weeks ago. He will be remembered by all for his kindness and for his gentle soul.

He is preceded in death by his father, Josef Rettig, and his mother, Rosa (Auerbach).

Karl was laid to rest on September 3, 2025 (Dorothy’s birthday) at Mt. Sharon Cemetery, Springfield, PA. Karl Rettig's life was a testament to love, resilience, and the pursuit of craftsmanship. His memory will forever be cherished by all who had the privilege of knowing him.

Donations in his memory can be made to bloodcancerunited.org (formerly The Leukemia And Lymphoma Society).
