Karl Sutter Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Wake Funeral & Cremations Services, Inc. on Feb. 7, 2023.
Karl Vernon Sutter III passed away February 6, 2023, at his home surrounded by family
following a brave two year battle with cancer. Born on November 28, 1967, in Lake Bluff, Illinois,
he moved to Wrightsville Beach, NC, as a child and made many wonderful memories while
growing up in the beach community. Karl was active in all sports, but excelled at soccer and
cycling. His love of cycling led him to compete in the USCF Junior National Cycling
Championships in 1981 and placed in the top 35 for his age group. After this he focused his
attention on soccer while attending New Hanover High School where he was Captain and
Honorable Mention All State as a Senior. He remained an avid cyclist and loved riding at
Umstead and Fontana with his Dad and brother, Scott. Following graduation from High School,
he proudly attended North Carolina State University and was a founding member of the North
Carolina Delta chapter of Phi Delta Theta. Upon graduation in 1991 with a degree in Civil
Engineering, he joined Kimley-Horn Associates in Raleigh and enjoyed a career in the
Structures Division until his retirement in 2021. Karl was a gifted coach and shared his love of
soccer with members of several challenge and select teams for many years with CASL. He also
led a Bible study for members of his fraternity at NCSU.
Karl met his wife, Lori, through mutual friends in 1994 and they married five years later. They
have two daughters, Abbey and Riley. His family was the love of his life and there was nothing
he enjoyed more than being together with them. They especially enjoyed attending Carolina
Hurricanes games.
Karl was a member of Good Hope Baptist Church, where he served in many roles including
Bible study leader, Worship Team Leader, and Elder. Whether singing, teaching, or writing
devotionals, he was passionate about sharing the Gospel however he could. Even after his
diagnosis he continued to serve within the church and with several International Ministries.
Karl was kind, generous, a friend to all, and an incredible father and loving husband. He will be
dearly missed by his wife and best friend of 23 years, Lori; daughters, Abbey and Riley; father,
Karl V. Sutter II; mother, Anne Sutter; brother, Scott Sutter; step brother, Dereck and his wife
Gray; step sister Kyle and her husband Kip; step brother Ryan and his wife Michelle; as well as
several nieces and nephews, and great nieces and great nephews. He was preceded in death
by grandparents Karl and Elizabeth Sutter and Stuart and Hazel Douglas; step mother, Connie
Sutter.
Family visitation will be held at Good Hope Baptist Church, 6630 Good Hope Church Road,
Cary, on Saturday, February 11, at 10:30, followed by A Celebration of Life at 12:30. Burial will
be in the church cemetery.

I am so sadden to hear of Karl's passing. I enjoyed working with him over the years at Kimley-Horn. He was a great practice builder and engineer. He was always ready to jump in and solve the problem at hand. He will be missed by all who have had the privilege to know and work with him.
