Karl Williams Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Sep. 21, 2025.
Karl Scott Williams, 67, of Purcellville, Virginia died peacefully on Friday, September 19, 2025 surrounded by family after a courageous battle with AL Amyloidosis.

Karl was born on May 12, 1958 to Major S. Williams, Jr. and Katie Cash Williams in Richmond, Virginia. He graduated from George Wythe High School in Richmond. Following high school, he entered the University of Virginia to participate in the Track and Field program; as a member of the team he ran the high hurdles holding the school record for decades. As a representative for the University, Karl ran in the Olympic Trials for the 1980 Olympics in Eugene, Oregon, but due to the boycotting of the Olympics was not given the opportunity to run for the United States. Karl received his degree in Special Education from the University of Virginia and used this degree to educate students at Albemarle High School (1980-2000) and Stone Bridge High School (2000 - 2016). Not only did Karl help students in the classroom, but was an avid supporter of the track and field programs. He coached at both high schools, helped as a starter at Track Meets and worked the various cross country races throughout Loudoun County. On Fridays, many would see Mr. Williams at the football games helping either with the chains or security.

Karl was an avid golfer who loved to spend a day golfing with his buddies from the schools, whether in Charlottesville or those in Loudoun County. If he could not golf, then you might find him fishing, working in the yard, walking the dog throughout the neighborhood or enjoying time with his family. Karl will be remembered for his love of teaching and his patience to help those students who needed a little extra care in high school. Karl touched so many lives in many different ways.

Karl is survived by his loving wife, Mary Jane and son Kolby James and fiancee Maizie Mendenall. He is predeceased by his parents, Major S. Williams, Jr and Katie Cash Williams plus his older brother Michael Stanley. He is survived by his sister Cathy Dawkins and brother in law, Warne (Katia and Marc), his twin brother, Kevin (Kyle and Michaela), brothers-in-law Stanley Jennings (Robert Harding) and Mark Jennings (Naomi) along with aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews. His memories will live on through his family, friends, and all the lives he touched.

A prayer from the Hurdlers' Bible, as shared by his Coach: "Now I lay me down my blocks, I pray the Lord for socks and jocks. If I should die before the gun, I pray to the Lord that my race be won." Karl Williams has won his final race on earth and can now exchange his shoes for a pair of golden wings in heaven.

Visitation will take place at St. Francis De Sales Church between 11:30 and 12:30 on Friday, September 26, 2025 followed by a funeral mass at 1:00 at St. Francis De Sales Catholic Church

In lieu of flowers, please send donations to the University of Virginia Track and Field Program or the University of Virginia Curry School of Education, in memory of Karl Scott Williams.

My deepest condolences to Coach Williams´ family, friends, and all whose lives he so profoundly touched. I pray the Lord wraps His comforting arms around the family during this difficult time, bringing peace that surpasses understanding. I´ll never forget his warm smile and the encouraging words he offered at every track meet-especially on the days I felt I´d fallen short. He had a gift for reminding me that effort meant more than outcome, and that growth often blooms from the hardest moments. His voice, his belief in me, echoed long after the races ended. Coach Williams´ legacy lives on in every heart he lifted and every life he inspired.

Karl will be greatly missed by all who knew him. He is now as on Earth a heavenly angel. His love of life through his family & as a teacher was truly genuine. He always had a smile, was willing to help a co-worker or friend. The tireless dedication as a teacher, coach & mentor to all his students can never be matched in words. Rest easy my friend in the arms of Jesus!

Without a doubt, one of the finest men I have known. His respect for his students and athletes carried the day. He was kind, generous and caring, especially to those who needed it the most. We are all better people for having known him.

Sending my condolences to Karl's family. I haven't seen Karl since I graduated from GWHS(1975) in Richmond, but remember him and his twin brother very well. We actually grew up in the Blackwell community of Southside Richmond. An outstanding member of our HS track team and a genuinely nice guy. Even though I am a few years older, he was well known for his good nature and athletic ability on the track. May God provide his blanket of comfort, love and support to his family and close friends.
Sincerely, Neil Christian
