Karla Boreiko, age 70, died after a year-long battle with cancer on June 1, 2024, in her Orange County Home surrounded by her loving family. She was born in Springfield Illinois on October 20, 1953, to the late Mary Louise Toigo Dunn and Karl Hogarth Dunn.

Karla grew up in Madison, Wisconsin where she lived until her early 20’s. A graduate of West High School she went on to earn a Bachelor’s degree in Special Education at the University of Wisconsin – Madison. It was during this time in 1975 that she met and married Craig John Boreiko who was to be her loving husband for nearly 50 years. Karla and her husband briefly lived in South Pasadena, California where Karla worked as a Special Education Teacher for Los Angeles County Schools. In 1979 Karla and her husband moved to Chapel Hill, North Carolina. Karla resumed teaching with the Chapel Hill-Carrboro City Schools, first as a special education classroom teacher and later as an Autism Specialist, designing and implementing programs at multiple schools to help autistic children achieve their maximum potential. She went on to earn her National Teaching Certification which she maintained until her “pre-COVID retirement”. After COVID had thinned the ranks of school staffing, Karla came out of retirement until her cancer diagnosis in 2023. Karla loved travel, fashion, fine wine and food, and music. She and her husband showed and bred Rhodesian Ridgeback dogs and took pride in knowing that the pups they produced went into loving homes. Similarly, she was tireless in her support of Animal Rescue. Above all was her fierce love for her grandchildren whom she cherished until her last days. Karla was preceded in death by her sister Heather Dunn and is survived by her sisters Debbie Yee and Dawn Stemo. Karla is also survived by her husband, Craig John Boreiko, her son Nathan John Boreiko, daughter Alyssa Boreiko Glogowski, son-in-law Jon Glogowski and two grandchildren, Jack Glogowski and Lillie Glogowski.

A Memorial honoring the life of Karla Boreiko will be held at a time yet to be determined. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be made to the American Cancer Society or to your local Animal Rescue.
