Karol Buchanan Obituary
Obituary published on Legacy.com by A.W. Rich Funeral Home - Fairfax on Apr. 30, 2025.
Karol J (Durgan) Buchanan, 70, of Eden, moved on to her next adventure, unexpectedly, with her husband, David Buchanan on April 9th.
She was born March 6th, 1955 to F. Elaine Durgan & Roy M. Durgan of Stowe. She attended Johnson State College and UVM School of Nursing where she received her Nursing Degree, and worked as an RN for Copley Hospital, The Manor Nursing Home and Lamoille Home Health.
Her early years were spent riding horses (and one ornery pony named Rocky), with her best friend Margo. Together they attended basketball and soccer games, did barn chores, cleaned for the Salvas's and worked as cashiers at Lackey's Variety Store and Snow's Creemee Stand. She also worked at Vermont Precision Resistor, where she met some of her oldest, and dearest life long friends.
Karol loved animals of all kinds, and kept the family up to date on all the visiting turtles, minks, turkeys and deer that wandered through their field. She especially loved Geese. In her early 20's, she had a goose and a gander (Jackson and Mississippi), who were as fond of her as she was of them, and if you've ever met a goose, you know what an accomplishment this is.
She met David Buchanan in 1984, and they married April 13th, 1993. They shared the same sense of humor, love of nature, and spent more than 40 happy years together, only vehemently disagreeing about tomatoes (she loved them).
Long after she retired, Karol continued to care for friends and family, perpetually attempting to find solutions for any health issue one might have, or to lend a supportive hand.
She put thousands of miles on back roads, taking photographs of blue skies & clouds, sunrises and sunsets, bridges and trees, anything and everything she found beautiful.
Her summers were often spent reading on the back porch, and watching the "hummingbird wars" (we're still not sure what she put in their nectar, but they would just about fly through your ear to get to it.)
She was well known for having a traveling garden in the bed of her truck, full of plants, seeds and bulbs she hadn't quite gotten around to planting yet.
Karol will be missed by all who knew and loved her.
She is survived by her daughter, Erika Eldred of Johnson, VT, a brother Bruce (Doris Apt) Durgan of San Jose, CA, a sister Jennifer (James) Fish of Seligman, AZ, a sister Lisa (James) Sargent of Waterbury, VT and a granddaughter (in heart), Julia Piper of Duxbury, VT, a nephew, Steven (Sandy) Fish of Newport, NH, a niece, Megan (Dylan) & great nephew Mason Haskins of Waterbury, VT, former spouse Ernest (Mindy Parisi) Eldred of Stowe, VT, Uncle Edward (Dorothy) Lemieux of Washington, VT, Aunt Rose Lemieux of Washington, VT, and many cousins.
She was predeceased by her parents, F. Elaine & Roy Durgan, nephew Thomas Fish, and Sister in Law, Brenda Bird.
A memorial service will be held on Friday, May 23rd at 11:00 AM at the Stowe Community Church on Main St. in Stowe. Please wear something blue in honor of Karol's favorite color. Reception to follow at Ernie Eldred's residence on Shaw Hill Rd, in Stowe.
