Mildred Whiting Sargent, resident of Johnson died at her home the evening of February 23, 2026, just days after celebrating her 98th birthday. Her daughters were with her. It was a soft, peaceful passing, after a day of being together.

Mildred, better known as Millie, was born February 10, 1928, in Mankato, Minnesota. She was the fourth child born to parents, Zach Whiting, (1976), Ellen Fisher Whiting, (1989). One more sister was born before traveling by car in the early 1930's back to the Whiting family in Vermont. Later, a fth sister was born in Vermont.

Mildred graduated from Cambridge High School in 1945. She participated in the WWII e ort by joining the all-women organization, "The Waves". She worked as an insurance assistant in o ces located in Cambridge and Burlington. She wrote policies for farmers in these counties, as well as, all areas of insurance coverage. She returned to Johnson in the early fties. She accepted a sales clerk position at the former Gillens' Department Store on the Main Street of Johnson. She met her future husband, Doug, a native of Johnson, at the store. He had come in on advisement of his Father to meet the pretty girl behind the counter.

Doug and Millie raised their family outside of the village of Johnson on the Hogback Road. Millie was the book-keeper for Doug's business, "The Johnson Gulf Station". She was a great cook, baker, seamstress and knitter. She served on the Lamoille Union High School Board in the late sixties and seventies. She taught Sunday School at the United Church in Johnson.

Along with her four sisters, Marion (Locke), Lois (Tatro), Helen (Neil), and Alice Whiting they created "Sisters' Choice", a juried quilting collaborative. The sisters traveled yearly to craft fairs selling their quilted creations.

Millie's true legacy will be her thirty-one years working as a preschool educator for the Johnson Elementary School. She leaves memories of kindness, love and a simple set of old fashioned values respected and remembered by the community.

She was pre-deceased by her husband, of fty-seven years, Douglas (2010) her daughter, Susan (2023), her siblings: Arthur (1974), Marion, (2018), Lois, (2016), Helen (2001). Her beloved pets, Kaylee, (1986) Sam, (2005), Peggy-Sue, (2025), cats: Roxie, Rusty and Polly.

Mildred leaves behind her sister, Alice Whiting of Johnson, her daughter, Jennifer (Essex Junction) and daughter Laurie (Thomas Gravelin), South Burlington, grandchildren; Ellen, (Garrett Lyon), Ausable Forks, New York State, Benjamin, (Gravelin), South Burlington; Great-grandchildren, Clara (Lyon) and Parker (Lyon).

A Memorial Service will be held, March 28,2026 at 10:30 am, at the United Church in Johnson.

Reception at the church will follow. A private ceremony at the family plot, Lamoille View Cemetery will be scheduled in the Spring.
