It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Katherine Adams Lyon Daniel, Ph.D., aged 63, who passed away on July 10, 2025, just days shy of her 64th birthday. Born on July 17, 1961, in Oyster Bay, NY, to the late Melvin and Ruth Adams Lyon, Katherine dedicated her life to public health as the Associate Director of Communications for the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, where her passion and expertise made lasting contributions to the well-being of communities across the nation and the world.
Katherine was a beloved wife to her husband, Garrison Daniel, with whom she shared a cherished marriage of 32 years. Together, they built a life filled with adventure, joy, and the love of family. Katherine was a proud mother to her two boys, Alden (27) and Aidan (20), and especially delighted in being the oldest of five siblings. Throughout her life, she embraced each role with grace and enthusiasm, leaving an indelible mark on all who knew her.
A vibrant member of the Mothers of Boys (MOB) (a/k/a the "Village"), Katherine fostered strong friendships through shared experiences and a deep-seated love for her sons and their friends. Her spirit shone brightly at gatherings of friends and family where laughter and camaraderie filled the air.
Katherine's love for life extended beyond her family and career. She found immense joy in painting, nurturing her plants, and exploring the world with her beloved husband. Together, they embarked on unforgettable adventures, from their annual family visits to the Hamptons, snorkeling in Hawaii to traversing the historic landscapes in Europe and adventures on an African Safari.
After her cancer diagnosis in December of 2020, she took every opportunity to live her even better "best" life with her family and friends. Her passion for cherishing every moment had a profound impact on everyone around her.
Katherine's legacy will forever be cherished in the hearts of her family, friends, and all who had the privilege of knowing her. Her spirit will live on in the memories of laughter shared, lessons imparted, and love given freely.
Katherine is survived by her husband Garrison, her sons Alden and Aidan, her brother Thomas Lyon, M.D., her half-brothers Andreas Lyon, Eric Lyon, Niels Lyon and numerous nieces and nephews.
A memorial and a celebration of Katherine's life will be held at a later date, where family and friends will gather to honor her memory, share stories of her remarkable spirit and adventures, toast her very beautiful spirit, and party (because that is what she wanted!). Following her wishes, a private cremation will take place, with her ashes lovingly scattered at a location meaningful to her.
Katherine, you will be greatly missed, but your light will continue to guide us all. Your life was a beautiful tapestry dedication of love and kindness, and we are forever grateful for the threads you wove into our lives.

Garrison, Alden, and Aidan - you were loved by a woman who truly knew how to love with all of her heart. soul, mind, and strength. My heart is breaking with you. I was so blessed to work with Katherine at CDC and to call her a dear friend. I have many fond memories which I will cherish forever. I will miss being her "go to" person for sewing projects. Sending big hugs to you all.

KLD, was a bright light in every room. I´ll never forget helping her choose a gift at Target and how even in small moments, her warmth and thoughtfulness shone through. Working with her in OADC, she led with grace, lifted others, and made everyone feel valued. Her absence is felt deeply. Sending heartfelt prayers to her family and CDC friends. May they find comfort in the legacy she leaves behind.
Rest easy, KLD. You were truly one of a kind.

Katherine was an extraordinary leader whose integrity, technical rigor, and deep empathy for others shaped the way CDC communicated. During the Ebola and Zika epidemics, she brought clarity and reassurance when they were most needed-making sure physicians, communities, and the public had accurate, timely, and sensitive information. Her ability to bring together communicators and scientific experts set a standard for public health communications that will endure. Working with her was always a pleasure. She was kind and nice and thoughtful, with a great sense of humor. She is sorely missed.

We are so missing KLD already. Condolences to Garrison and the boys and all the family. I loved working with Katherine and being her friend and neighbor.
