Katherine Burghoff Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Rose Hill Funeral Home on Jan. 7, 2026.
Katherine Mulrine (McIlroy) Burghoff, affectionately known as Kim or Kay, passed away peacefully at home surrounded by her children on December 31, 2025, in Rocky Hill, Connecticut, at the age of 88. A lifelong educator, devoted mother, and cherished friend, Katherine will be remembered for her bright green eyes, warm smile, and the hearty, infectious laugh that could light up any room.
Born on March 29, 1937, in Hartford, Connecticut, Katherine was the beloved daughter of the McIlroy family. A proud graduate of the Central Connecticut State College, she went on to dedicate her life to education, building a long and rewarding career that touched the lives of countless students. Katherine believed wholeheartedly in the power of learning, guiding with both wisdom and grace.
She created a home filled with compassion, laughter, and unwavering love. She raised four children, each of whom she nurtured with strength, patience, and pride. Her family was her heart's greatest joy, and her legacy lives on through her surviving children-Robert J. Burghoff, Douglas P. Burghoff, and Jennifer J. Burghoff-as well as her brother, William J. McIlroy III. She was preceded in death by her son, William K. Burghoff III. Katherine also leaves behind her daughter-in-law Susan P. Burghoff and grandchildren Cody J. Burghoff and his wife Brianna, Kayleigh M. Burghoff, and Madison M. Burghoff.
Katherine's life was beautifully defined by her deep love for her family, but her life extended well beyond the home and classroom. As a dedicated member of the Rocky Hill Congregational Church, Katherine found fulfillment in faith and community and volunteered her time at Hartford Hospital to care for others in need, and she was awarded Rocky Hill's volunteer of the year in 2006.
Whether guiding students in the classroom or mentoring others, she brought wisdom, patience, and grace to everything she did. She worked hard, loved deeply, and left an indelible mark on everyone blessed to know her.
Visitation for Katherine will be on Sunday, January 11, 2026 from 11:00AM to 12:00PM at Rose Hill Funeral Home in Rocky Hill with funeral services immediately following. She will be laid to rest privately by her family. Katherine's spirit - warm, strong, and full of love - will continue to inspire us all.
