Katherine “Kay” L. Hughes, 84 of Cumberland, passed away peacefully at her home on Saturday, September 13, 2025.

Kay was born on January 1, 1940, in San Jose, California. She is the daughter of the late Richard C. and Ruth K. (Hildebrandt) Howard. Kay

honorably served her country in the United States Navy. Over the years, she made her home in California, Virginia, and ultimately Ohio. Kay previously attended the Buffalo Presbyterian Church. She worked as both a nurse’s aide and a mail carrier. Kay loved tending to her flowers, watching hummingbirds and owls, quilting, crocheting, riding motorcycles, chocolate, and had a great patriotic love for Donald Trump. Most of all, her greatest joy and pride were her beloved sons.

Kay is survived by her friends and caregivers, Denise and Dirk Martin, Traci and Joe Aman; her sister, Joy Felix; as well as several nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.

In addition to her parents, Kay is preceded in death by her husband, James R. Hughes, who passed away on March 22, 2017; and her sons, Raymond and Richard Hughes.

The family would like to thank Guernsey County Hospice and Amy’s Helping Hands for their kind and compassionate care towards Katherine over the past several months.

A graveside service will be held at 2:30 PM on Wednesday, September 17, 2025, at the Cumberland Cemetery at 559 Church Street North, Cumberland, Ohio 43732. Pastor Frank Miller will officiate the service. Kay will be laid to rest beside her husband James with Military Honors provided by the Guernsey County Veterans Council.
