Katherine Krist, a beacon of strength and love, passed away peacefully on October 11, 2025, in Strongsville, Ohio, at the age of 85. Born on February 16, 1940, in the ethnic German village of Gorjani, Yugoslavia, Katherine's early years were marked by resilience as she and her family fled to Linz, Austria, during a tumultuous time. After 11 years in Austria, Katherine, alongside her family, sought a new beginning in the United States, arriving in 1956 and embracing the promise of the American dream.
In 1957, Katherine's life was forever changed when she met the love of her life, Josef Krist. Their union was one of enduring partnership and mutual respect, lasting 64 years until Josef's passing in 2023. Together, they raised a family with love and devotion, with Katherine being a loving mother to Fred J. Krist (Theresia) and the late Richard Krist. She was the cherished daughter of the late Matias and Katherine Hahner, a dear sister to Elizabeth Weiss (the late Michael) and Eva Poerner (Anthony), and a doting grandmother to Michelle Goettemoeller (Andrew), Nicholas Krist (Taylor), and Maria Pringle (Logan). Her legacy continued with her great-grandchildren, Henry, Caroline, and Briar, who brought her immense joy. She was also a loving aunt to many nieces and nephews.
Katherine's talents were many, and her hands were rarely still. A skilled seamstress, she crafted beautiful garments with the same care and attention she devoted to her family. Her hobbies were a reflection of her vibrant spirit; she found joy in singing, dancing, knitting, and bowling. Katherine's culinary skills were legendary, with her cooking and baking bringing people together in celebration of life's simple pleasures.
Her commitment to her heritage was unwavering. Katherine and Josef were pillars of the German community, often found at the Donauschwaben German American Cultural Center in Olmsted Falls, where they danced, sang, and fostered a sense of unity among their peers. Katherine's pride in her German roots was matched only by her love for her adopted country, a testament to her ability to find home wherever she was surrounded by family and friends.
Katherine Krist's life was a tapestry of courage, love, and dedication. Her memory will be cherished and kept alive in the hearts of those who were fortunate enough to know her. As we bid farewell to this remarkable woman, we celebrate the legacy she leaves behind-a legacy of love, resilience, and the enduring bonds of family. Katherine's light will continue to shine brightly through the lives of those she touched, and her story will be told with admiration for generations to come.
