Dolores "Dolly" Sheffield of Strongsville, passed away peacefully at age 97, surrounded by her loving family on October 8, 2025. She was born in Chicago, IL to William and Fern Selleck. She was the beloved wife of the late Glenn Walter Sheffield and devoted mother to Robert and Laurette Mentley (Jeffrey). She was the proud grandmother of Sarah Mentley Alexander (Don), Jeremy Mentley (Megan), Emma Mentley Wuetrich (David) and Nathan Mentley, and great-grandmother to Jack and Eli Mentley, John Alexander, and Walter Wuetrich.
She was preceded in death by brother William Selleck, sister Kathleen Nelson (David; deceased), and sister-in law Dolores Selleck. She will be remembered by her nieces and nephews, dear cousin Ruth Stover, many friends and her "second daughter" Donna Sutter.
A graduate of Baldwin-Wallace College, Dolly taught first grade for many years in Strongsville. After retirement, she found time to pursue her passion for reading. She loved the Strongsville Library. She enjoyed basket making, becoming a talented and prolific weaver. A devotee of opera, she relished attending performances with friends. The holidays, especially Halloween and Christmas, were enthusiastically celebrated, where she set in motion many family traditions.
Her life was lived committed to service, as a teacher, mother, sister, daughter, grandmother, friend, and as a member of her community, she gave to others simply because that is what you do. She moved with purpose and dedication, and she managed to do so with quiet grace and a sweetness about her that drew people to her.
Dolly was a tiny lady with a mighty spirit. She spent many years as an active volunteer for her church, and for the Red Cross. She was a member of a ladies' swim club, "Aqua Dames," where she loved to swim laps at the Strongsville Senior Center. She was a member of the Brunswick United Methodist Church, the Strongsville Historical Society, two Red Hat chapters, the Philip Livingston Chapter, Daughters of the American Revolution in Michigan and had been an associate member of the Hannah Luther Bosworth Chapter in Strongsville.
Dolly will be remembered for her warmth, her quest for knowledge, her altruism, her devotion to friends and family, and for her loving heart.
A Celebration of Life to honor her and her legacy will be held in Michigan in 2026.
