Katherine D. Scanlon, formerly of Bethesda, MD, died very comfortably on October 17, 2018 in the company of her daughter Joan, and granddaughters Juliet and Paige Taylor. She was born in Philadelphia on 6/17/1922 to the late Thomas Aloysius Dillon and Agnes Gallagher Dillon. Unfortunately Katherine, or Kay as she was better known, lost her father when she was two years old. This set the stage for a childhood of struggles for her family during the Great Depression, including those of her younger brother, the late Thomas P. Dillon, III. Kay's aunt Ann Gallagher, who had the honor of being the youngest nurse during World War I, supported the family, as did her other aunt, Katherine Gallagher. Despite this childhood, Kay gained warm and thoughtful social skills during a very positive adolescence, and never had difficulty establishing friendships, many of which were lifelong. During her young adult years, Kay garnered noted success in selling advertising for Donnelly's in Philadelphia, and in 1950, she married the late James Patrick Scanlon, M.D. She became an active member of the auxiliary for the hospital, and she and her husband belonged to the University and Congressional Country clubs. She was a member of the Ladies Golf Team, and was her husband's golfing partner on vacations. Kay was a volunteer for the parish administration over several years, where her daughters had attended Annunciation School. She enjoyed playing bridge well into her 80s. Kay was particularly known for her generosity within the Scanlon family. She was predeceased by her daughter, Katherine Scanlon Adams. She is also survived by her grandson David Michael Adams, Jr., and stepson James Patrick Scanlon, Jr. of Mt. Dora, FL. Joan, Joan's husband Lauriston S. Taylor, III, and their daughter Paige reside in Littleton MA. Juliet and David live in Boston, MA. Services will held on November 27 at the Leo P. Gallagher & Son Funeral Home, 31 Arch Street, Greenwich, CT at 11:00 AM. Kay will be interred with her daughter, Katherine, at the Stanwich Congregational Church cemetery in Greenwich; burial will be private In lieu of flowers, please send donations in Katherine Adams' name to support melanoma research at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center. Checks, made payable to Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, should be mailed to: Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, Attn: Annual Giving Programs 885 Second Avenue, 7th Floor New York, NY 10017. I have such fond memories of my grandmother. I remember her taking to places/museums to learn about the history of this great country. I remember when she would go out of her way to make one of my favorite meals: green beans. She would always tell these great stories about all the famous golfers that would come to the Congressional Club for tournaments. She was an amazing, fun, and generous. I will her greatly. Love, Paige.

I have a lot of fun memories of my grandmother. Sometimes taking to places to learn history about this great country. I would remember her cooking and making my favorite meal: green beans. She would always go out of her way to make sure I had a great time while visited her in her Bethesda apartment. She was fun, polite, and all-around amazing person. I will miss her greatly.

I have such fond memories as a child of being with my Uncle Jim, Aunt Kay, Kathy and Joan when they would come to Philadelphia. Aunt Kay was always so friendly and warm and interested in what we were up to as kids. My deepest condolences to Joan, her family and all the extended family. May Aunt Kay rest in peace. Love Pat, Connie, Janis and David

Kay was my in town Mom and later became our daughters honorary GodMother after Katy's passing . Kay was like a member of our family who we so enjoyed being with . There was no one as kind , generous and fun as dear Kayse.

I first met Kay in Paris when she would visit Katherine and David. We spent many happy fun times together. Latter years I visited her in Bethesda, MA, she would invite me to Congressional Golf Club that she so enjoyed. My memory is of a beautiful woman with such a loving heart. I shall miss you dearest friend.

A message for my friend Joan -- it is always a tremendous loss when one loses a parent. I did not know your mother, but I know you, and without your mother, there wouldn't have been a "you." So I am grateful for her life, as I am grateful to have you as my friend. Love, Nancy (G)

The end of an era. I remember the Scanlons well, they lived right around the corner when I was growing up in Wesley Heights. Jim and my father Doug were in the same line of work. Sorry to see Kay leave us, such an elegant lady.
