Katherine Jane Berndt Schlatter passed away peacefully on October 17, 2025, at University Heights Health & Living Community, Indianapolis, Indiana. She was born in Clinton, Indiana on June 9, 1927, to Albert Berndt and Verna (Van Sickle) Berndt.
She grew up in Harmony, Indiana and graduated from Van Buren High School in 1945.
Kate lost her mother at age 11 and her father at age 15. She was then raised by her aunt and uncle, Jim and Mildred Van Sickle of Harmony. Their daughter, Phyllis Van Sickle Schlatter is a cousin, but they became like sisters.
Kate attended Indiana State Teachers College (now Indiana State University) for 2 years. She then married Harvey H. Schlatter, also of Harmony, Indiana, on September 12, 1947. Though Harvey's career directing high school bands took them to live in several different communities in Indiana, Kate never minded because she loved looking for new houses. More than that, Kate loved to travel. Her most memorable trip was to Cairo, Egypt. Post retirement from Arthur Andersen and Company, Kate conducted Indianapolis city tours and regional day trips well into her nineties.
Kate was preceded in death by her parents, Albert Berndt and Verna Van Sickle Berndt, husband, Harvey H. Schlatter, son, Mark H. Schlatter, and granddaughter, Kimberly DeWitt.
She is survived by her daughters Alyca (Jim) Basch, Janna DeWitt, son, Kurt (Tammy) Schlatter and grandchildren, Tony DeWitt, Nick (Stefani)
DeWitt, Grant Schlatter, Ian Fortuna, Jenny Schlatter, John Schlatter, katy Wolf, Beth Putz, Casey Basch, Jason Basch, Nicki Basch, and greatgrandchildren, Casey Putz, Ryan Putz, Daniel Wolf, Elizabeth Wolf, Vivian wolf, Michael wolf, Emily DeWitt, and Mark A. Schlatter.
