Katherine Toepfer Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Oct. 18, 2025.
Katherine Stoney Toepfer, 79, formerly of James Island, SC, passed away on April 28, 2025, in Goose Creek, SC. Katherine was born on November 15, 1945, in Alexandria, VA. Her parents were Edward William Toepfer, Sr. and Sarah Welch Toepfer. Katherine had two older brothers, Edward William Toepfer, Jr. and Norman Welch Toepfer.

Katherine graduated from St. Agnes School, a private Episcopal school in Alexandria, VA, in 1963. Katherine was also a graduate of the College of Charleston in 1968.

Charleston County Public Schools employed Katherine from the Fall of 1968 until the end of the 2007 school year. She taught seventh-grade science at James Island Middle School during that time. Each summer, Katherine worked many hours at James Island Middle School developing the school-wide schedule to ensure a smooth start to the school year for teachers and students.

When the health of her parents began to decline, Katherine added a suite to her home on James Island for her parents and moved them from Alexandria, VA. She cared for her parents until her mother passed away in 1991 and her father passed away in 1995.

After retiring from teaching, Katherine worked at James Island County Park.

In addition to her love of children, Katherine had a great love for animals, including her many dogs, numerous cats, and even the Koi fish which she kept in a small pond in her backyard. Katherine also enjoyed participating in a bowling league at Ashley Bowling Lanes in Charleston, SC, for many years.

Katherine was predeceased by her brother Edward William Toepfer, Jr. (1963), her brother Norman Welch Toepfer (1972), and her parents. Katherine was cremated and interred in the family plot at Ivy Hill Cemetery in Alexandria, VA, along with her brothers and her parents.
