Katherine (Kathy) Jean Van Sickel (May 29, 1975 – October 29, 2023)

 

Kathy died peacefully, surrounded by family and friends, following a courageous battle with cancer. She faced the toughest challenge of her life with grace and optimism, never losing hope. She was appreciative of the love and support that she received throughout her cancer journey – from family and friends to her bedside caregivers in her final days.

 

Born in Ames, Ia., Kathy held a deep love of the Midwest that spanned her entire life. She fondly considered Sheffield, Ia., as “home,” though she resided in Crofton, Md., for most of her adult life.

 

Kathy is survived by her mother, Linda Van Sickel; her father, Michael Van Sickel (Lori); her brothers, Michael Van Sickel (Kim) and Mark Van Sickel (Heather); her half-brother, Ryan Van Sickel; her nieces, Taylor and Sidney Van Sickel; her Uncle Richard (Karen), cousins William Mason (Jennifer), Thomas Mason (Elizabeth), Amy Friedel (Aaron), Carrie Campbell (Justin), Christopher Van Sickel (Brittany) and others.

 

She is preceded in death by her loving grandparents, Myles and Lois Mason, and Milan and Lavon Van Sickel.

 

Kathy graduated from Anne Arundel High School in 1993. In her professional life, she was a champion for kids and families in need of support, working as a Supervisor in the Child Protective Services division of the Maryland Department of Human Services for 27 years.

 

Kathy’s favorite place in the world was Iowa, surrounded by family. She could often be found riding four-wheelers and exploring the timber. She also enjoyed trips to Florida, where she could watch beautiful sunsets and spend time listening to the waves.

 

Kathy’s closest relationships exemplify how much love she carried throughout her life.

 

Linda and Kathy were a remarkable mother-daughter duo whose connection was not only unbreakable but also filled with a love that knew no bounds. They were best friends, often co-workers, travel companions, and regular movie dates. They shared countless secrets and inside jokes.

 

As a sister, Kathy was often referred to as the “rose between two thorns,” which was a title she wore proudly. Whether following an older brother down paths that led to mischief (at her own expense) or mothering and protecting a younger brother, her love for Mike and Mark was enduring.

 

As an aunt, she loved Taylor and Sidney like they were own. She took them on adventures. She doted on them as babies and never stopped spoiling them every chance she got. She cheered their every accomplishment and supported their biggest dreams.

 

Her victory over cancer did not take the form she hoped, but there is no doubt she entered heaven victorious, reunited with those she loved and missed so dearly. Her family and friends have gained an angel and will look for signs of her presence in their lives, like a ladybug stopping by to say hello.

 

A viewing will be held on Thursday, Nov. 2, from 5-7 p.m. at Beall Funeral Home, 6512 Crain Hwy, Bowie, Md. 20715. A Celebration of Life will take place on Friday, Nov. 3, at 1 p.m. at Community Memorial Methodist Church of Crofton, 1690 Riedel Road, Crofton, Md.

 

Kathy will be laid to rest at Graceland Cemetery in Webster City, Ia.

 

In lieu of flowers, the family requests contributions to the Neuroendocrine Tumor Research Foundation.
