Katherine Josephine Cox Venters passed away peacefully on August 16, 2025 at her favorite vacation spot in Murrell's Inlet surrounded by her family. A daughter of the late Reverend Wilburn S. Cox and Effie Mae Stone Cox, Katherine was born on December 23, 1933 in Williamsburg County, South Carolina. As a young woman, she worked at Warner Bros Sewing Room, and then went on to own/operate Venters' Grocery at Outland Crossroads in Hemingway, South Carolina. She became a pillar of the community, where she not only provided cold drinks and snacks to local farmers, but created a place where families in need knew they could come for help, or a welcoming place to just stop in and have a chat. In her later years, she was mostly a 'MaMa'! She loved her family dearly and was always just a call away when any of them needed help. She was always there when a back needed to be scratched, socks needed darning, children were sick, younger generations needed the Farmer's Almanac translated, canning advice was needed, family meals needed to be prepared, or entertaining stories of days gone by were requested by the grands! She was all of that and more! Her resourcefulness, borne from growing up in the Depression era South, was something she instilled in her family. In addition, she instilled in them the ability to find joy and contentment in the simple things in life. She taught her family how to work for what they wanted and served as a living example. Many times she would 'outwork' the younger crew while gardening or weeding! She loved to fish and eat fried fish. She also enjoyed going on the bus trips with her friends, often boasting that she'd been to all 48 of the contiguous United States. She was always ready for a road trip or an adventure. She was an avid gardener and loved working in the yard. She enjoyed doing word find puzzles and crocheting afghans for her family as well as for those in the nursing homes. She possessed a rare silent strength that was beneficial to all with whom she came into contact. These traits were the reason her family affectionately nicknamed her the 'Rock' of the family. She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Norman Mae Venters and her son, Norman Randall Venters. She is survived by her children Nell Harrell, Karen (Sherold) Owens, Teresa (Craig) Davis, and Melesa Bohanan and daughter-in-love Karen (Randy pre-deceased) Collins Venters. She had 9 grandchildren Andy Venters, Dreuh (Clint) Wilson, Kim (Alfie) Allen, Eddie (Megan) Owens, Andrew (Meredith) Owens, John Michael (Rachael) Davis, Alaina (Hunter) Thompson, Erikah (Corey) Davis, and Chantzler (Ally) Bohanan. She also had 10 great grandchildren: Norah Wilson, Drake Allen, Aria Allen, Anderson Owens, Emerson Owens, Aubrey Owens, Cullen Owens, Stella Thompson, Leira Thompson, Ezra Davis, Maya Davis, and Ava Davis. She is survived by her brother Jeremiah Livingston Cox and two sisters: Rebecca (Sambo) Evans and Lillian (Hank) McLaughlin. She is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews who she enjoyed so much over the years. Katherine's life was defined by kindness and selflessness. She consistently cared for others, leaving a lasting impact on everyone she met. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Monday, August 18, 2025 in the Morris Funeral Home Chapel, 416 N Main Street, Hemingway, South Carolina, 29554. The service will be available on live-stream through the Morris Funeral Home Facebook page. Burial will follow in the Freedom Tabernacle Full Gospel Church Cemetery located at 264 Roy Drive, Hemingway, South Carolina, 29554. The family will receive friends from 1:00 – 1:45 p.m. on Monday, August 18, 2025 in the Morris Funeral Home Chapel. Please sign the guest book at morris-funeralhome.com
