OSHKOSH – Kathleen L. Mitchell, age 99, of Oshkosh, formerly of Lancaster, passed away on Thursday, April 11, 2024, at Evergreen Nursing Home in Oshkosh. She was born on May 10, 1924, in Davenport, IA, the daughter of Ralph A. and Mary L. (Hinde) Martzahn. Kathleen graduated from Cuba City High School and furthered her education at Platteville Teacher’s College. On June 14, 1945, she was united in marriage to Lawrence “Darrell” Mitchell at Georgetown Methodist Church near Cuba City. After their marriage, they owned and operated a gas station, now Zenz Welding. Darrell passed away on May 19, 1970, and Kathleen moved to Lancaster. She worked at the Schreiner Public Library as well as Winskill School as a part-time teacher and teacher’s aide. Kathleen especially enjoyed the children’s story time. While living in Lancaster she was very involved in the Lancaster United Methodist Church. She also enjoyed genealogy, knitting, and later in life, puzzles. While Kathleen was a resident of Evergreen, she enjoyed volunteering at the gift shop, Manor Mart, assisting residents to get them to church services and sharing her time and talents with the resident government.
Survivors include her children: John (Rosie) Mitchell, Mary (Mick) Grosz, Dan (Chris) Mitchell, and Joe (Ricki) Mitchell: grandchildren, Rick Mitchell, Brian Mitchell, Ann Schoen, Mike Grosz, Marc Grosz, Abby Mitchell, Beth Mitchell, Charis Mitchell, Grace Mitchell; great grandchildren Elissa, Alec, Logan, Jack, Adam, Morgan, Jackson, Haylee, Rayna, Lucas and Dominick; a sister, Alice Ellison; other nieces and nephews and many friends wherever she lived.
In addition to her parents, Ralph and Mary (Hinde) Martzahn and her husband, Darrell, Kathleen was preceded in death by a brother, John Martzahn and an infant granddaughter Tanya Grosz.
Funeral services will be held on Saturday, April 27, 2024, at 11:00 a.m. at the Lancaster United Methodist Church in Lancaster with Pastor David Kim officiating. The burial will be in Hillside Cemetery, Lancaster. Family and friends may call on Saturday from 9:00 a.m. until the time of services at the church. Martin Schwartz Funeral Home & Crematory in Lancaster is assisting the family.
