Kathleen (Kathie) Mary Sisolak died peacefully just after 8pm on Wednesday, January 29th in San Antonio, Texas. She was 89 years old. While the story of her earthly life has ended, we invite family and friends to celebrate her time with us; remember and pray for her.
Born August 24, 1935 in Bayonne, New Jersey to parents Bette and Ed Liebhart, Kathie was the second of four children. She loved and excelled in school and decided to become a science teacher. She received her teaching degree from Montclair State College, which launched what would become a 40-plus career as a high school chemistry and biology teacher.
When she was 21, Kathie met Stephen Sisolak, an apprentice sheet metal worker from Perth Amboy, at a young adult group hosted by St. Cecelia's Church in Iselin, New Jersey. They married the day after Christmas in 1959.
Together, Kathie and Steve grew as people of Christian faith, were leaders in their church communities, and loved to study and teach Hebrew and Christian Scriptures. They raised five children together and celebrated 59 wedding anniversaries before Steve passed away in the Fall of 2019.
Following Steve's death, Kathie continued to teach bible study in New Jersey and then at the Village at Incarnate Word in San Antonio, where she moved in 2022. She found deep joy in sharing stories of God's love and the beauty of God's Creation. Kathie was a consummate educator and lifelong learner who loved to see a student's eyes light up when they grasped the subject of one of her lessons.
When she wasn't teaching, Kathie liked to travel, gather with friends and family, and go to see musical theater productions. She loved to stay active and became well-known at the Village at Incarnate Word for always being the first to sign up for every activity and outing.
Kathie is lovingly remembered by sons, Edward and wife Maria Luz of Ashland, MT; Daniel and wife Sonia of Framingham, MA; Carl of Milwaukee, WI; Joel and wife Julie of Olympia, WA; daughter, Joy of San Antonio, TX; and her grandchildren: Stephen, Sofia, Aiden, Veronica, Eva and husband Isaac Moncrief, Joshua, Jacob, Sarah, Carmen, Tristan, and Zula. She is preceded in death by her parents, beloved husband, and sister Patricia.
Kathie described her life as "blessed." Months before her death she said, "I've had a great life. It was nothing glamorous. It was just beautiful, so I have no regrets."
A Funeral Mass will be held at 10:00 am on Thursday, February 13, 2025 at Blessed Sacrament Church, 1890 Washington Valley Road, Martinsville NJ. Following the mass, Kathie's remains will be laid to rest alongside Steve, her beloved husband, at Holy Trinity Cemetery, South Florida Grove Rd, Hopelawn. Arrangements have been entrusted to Flynn and Son/Mitruska Funeral Home, located at 23 Ford Ave.,
Fords, NJ 08863.
