On September 10, 1939, Kathryn Fae Jarvis was born in Lebanon, Lynn, Oregon to Roy H and Mary Ellen Jarvis (Burge). At the age of 1 she moved back to Wilder, Idaho. They lived in a house on the rim of the hill. They could see the farmers below and the Snake River and Homedale, Idaho. The house was heated with a fireplace on the upper floor with the living room and kitchen. The children's bedrooms were downstairs with no heat. She said it would get real cold in the winter. She walked to and from school in Wilder for elementary and middle school. She walked to school most of the time in all kinds of weather. She went to high school in Homedale, Idaho and graduated in 1957. Kathy served a mission in the Central States Mission. She was privileged to serve in some church historical sites as well as the people of Missouri and surrounding states.
After her mission she came home to Homedale, Idaho. Gerry was working for Bill Hoagland and the church had a softball league at that time and the Hoagland girls played softball. Kathy came from Homedale to Melba to play with the girls. Diva Hoagland was her best friend. Gerry was designated as the driver to take them to different games. That is where he met Kathy.
After Gerry finished his mission and his time in the Army and after Kathy finished her mission they went on a double date with Lewella and Charles Weber. They went to Boise to a show. On the way home Gerry may or may not have had his arm around her shoulder. Only she can tell us, because Gerry fell asleep and slept all the way home. What a beautiful date.
Somewhere along the way Gerry got up the nerve to ask Kathy to marry him. They drove all across the state of Idaho on the night of August 12, 1964, so they could be married in the Idaho Falls temple on August 13, 1964, for time and all eternity.
They lived in Gilcrest where she raised 3 boys that they are proud of. She worked for 30 years for School District RE-1 as a cook and as the manager over the kitchens in 3 schools. She held many callings in her church including Primary President, Primary Teacher, Young Womens Camp Director, Family History Director.
She was a teacher of the young scouts in primary. When they needed to register her for Scouts, the council didn't know how to enter it. They decided to register her as a scout master. She was the first female scout master in the Long Peak Council of the Boy Scouts. She worked with the boys in the Cub Scout program in her ward and also at the district level. For many years she and Cathy Slaugh ran the concession stand at Cub Scout Day Camp. Kathy and Cathy would spend hours ordering toys and candy bars to sell at the concession stand. She completed Wood Badge training and collected many beavers around her house because she was in the beaver patrol. Kathy was also awarded the Silver Beaver for her service in scouting.
She spent a lot of time doing genealogy until her dementia made it hard to concentrate.
Gerry and Kathy served a service mission at the Welfare Cannery. There they helped members to can food to contribute to their year's supply of emergency food. They served a second service mission as missionaries to the institute program at UNC. There they helped the college students to attend institute and to continue to study the gospel.
Kathy loved to serve and help others. She took to heart the admonition "When you are in the service of your fellow beings, you are in the service of your Lord".
On June 14, 2024, Kathy was called home to be with her Heavenly Father, parents, 2 brothers, a sister, 2 stepsisters, a brother-in-law, and other loved ones who proceeded her in death. She is survived by her husband Gerry, sons Tracy (Shari), Scott (Miki), and Rodney (Angela). She has 11 grandchildren and 7 great grandchildren.
Kathryn was blessed to have many friends and acquaintances through the years. We are so thankful for everyone who helped her in her final days.
