Kathryne Diane Capshaw
Kathy Capshaw was called to her Lord and Savior on November 24, 2025, after a courageous 20 month fight against cancer. She was, to all who knew her from childhood on, a loving, caring, kind and compassionate presence in their lives who thought of others before herself. Always smiling, her quiet way made her easy to be around and even easier to love.
She was a loving and devoted wife and partner in life to her husband of 48 years Clint Capshaw. She brought out the very best in him from the time they met at Leavenworth (KS) Senior High School until her last moments with him at her side. She was a loving and dedicated mother, ready to drop everything and listen to her children (or their friends) when they were ready to talk. Her devotion to their happiness and success combined with her model of strong work ethic and personal accountability helped them to become talented and accomplished teenagers and adults. She was a proud professional educator, teaching early elementary ages for 30 years delighting in seeing children learn to read and providing them a safe and happy place to learn. She was a caring friend who gave love and friendship and received it back tenfold. She loved to shop, always looking for the perfect small gift for a friend or family member. And she loved cheetah print.
Kathy spent her last days at home surrounded by her family and comforting them with her acceptance of God's plan for her and with the same grace and quiet strength with which she lived her life. She and the family were supported by an army of loving friends and neighbors who provided emotional support, accommodations, transportation and meals. She was surprised, though those close to her were not, to hear from so many people about the difference she had made in their lives through some small gesture or kind word. She was a devout Catholic and found peace and comfort in the Church throughout her life, and especially from St. Mary's in Plantersville TX for the past 15 years.
She was amazing. And she really was that nice.
Kathy was born February 9, 1954, at Cushing Hospital in Leavenworth Kansas to Henry and Nell Hoffman, the second of 6 children. 15 years later she would work at Cushing as a switchboard operator (yes, the kind you see in old movies with plugs and a board). After graduating with Clint from Leavenworth Senior HS in 1972 she attended Kansas State University for 1 year before moving to Ruston Louisiana to join Clint at Louisiana Tech University. Working part time for the university, full-time jobs in the summer and with student loans (repaid in three years) to cover tuition, room and board she received her B.A. in Elementary Education (with Honors) in 1976.
While Clint finished Graduate School at Tech, Kathy took her first teaching job in 1976 at M.D. Shannon Elementary School in Morgan City, LA, welcoming to her classroom 33 first graders that had never attended kindergarten. Clint and Kathy were married June 4, 1977, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Leavenworth, the same church and school she attended as a child. As a young newlywed she awoke most Sunday mornings at 6AM to take her Grandma Hoffman to the 8:00AM Mass at St. Casimir while Clint went off to play golf.
She taught second grade at MacArthur Elementary at Fort Leavenworth, KS until following Clint to Arlington, TX where she substituted until accepting a full-time position with Arlington ISD. Like so many working mothers she somehow seamlessly managed her roles as a wife, teacher, and mother to Clinton (born 6/14/81), Christopher (born 3/27/84) and Kelly (born 10/18/86). Yet she always said that she was a better mother to her children, and wife to Clint, when she knew she was fulfilling her love of teaching. Clint again uprooted the family in 1992 for a short but wonderful 3-year stay in Modesto, CA where she taught in the Sylvan Union School District while again providing a loving and safe home for her family as they enjoyed the natural wonders of California.
In 1995 the family returned to Texas and a new family home in Katy. Kathy went to work in Katy ISD as a full-time teacher and all enjoyed the family lifestyle and quality education Katy provided. Clinton graduated from Taylor High School in 1999 and attended the University of North Texas where he received his BA and Master of Music Education (with Honors). He returned to Taylor HS in 2012 and remains as their Orchestra Director, residing in Katy. Christopher graduated from Cinco Ranch HS (the first graduating class) in 2002 and attended Texas Tech University where he earned his BS in Finance and MBA (with Honors) and is now SVP of City Bank residing in Prosper, TX. Kelly graduated from Cinco Ranch HS in 2005 and attended Texas Tech University where she earned her BS and MS in Accounting (with Honors). She holds a CPA and teaches Junior High Business in Lamar ISD, residing in Richmond, TX.
After both retired, the move was made in 2013 to the weekend house on Lake Conroe in Montgomery, TX. Many wonderful new friendships were formed, and they enjoyed spending time at the many wineries and event venues in the area as well as boating, tubing and the lake life with friends, family (especially the grandchildren) and wonderful neighbors. Kathy and Clint traveled extensively, often with friends, to Hawaii, Europe, New Zealand and Australia plus many trips to the Caribbean with Clint's diving buddies. They also enjoyed visiting many amazing places in the US and Canada, including a bucket list trip to Niagara Falls in July with Christopher and his family. A Mediterranean cruise and extended visits to Rome and Barcelona in October with two favorite couples preceded Kathy's passing by a few weeks.
Kathy is survived by her husband Clint, her three children Clinton (Jessica) Capshaw, Christopher (Stephanie) Capshaw and Kelly (Joe) Goodman; her six cherished grandchildren Nicholas, Daniel, Emma, Thomas, Charlie and Teddy; her five siblings Tom (Linda) Hoffman, Patrice (Richard) Dannevik, Greg Hoffman, Jeff (Gretchen) Hoffman, and Janet (Eddie) Hamner; her sister-in law Donna (John) Sumpter and brother-in-law Ben (Kristen) Capshaw. She is also survived by many wonderful nieces and nephews in Texas, Washington State, California, Louisiana and Oklahoma.
The family would like to thank Dr. Shane Simpson, Linda and Roxanne of Houston Methodist Primary Care in Montgomery for their unwavering support, care, advice and prayers; Houston Methodist The Woodlands Neal Cancer Center, especially Dr. Priya Ramshesh for her honesty and compassion, and the entire nursing, administrative, tech, insurance and pharmacy staff of the Infusion Center who somehow manage to bring a little joy each day to those facing one of life's cruelest challenges; Amedysis Hospice, especially Holland, Sarah and Michelle, for their care, attention and dedication at the most difficult of times; Father Ed Kucera and all the staff and volunteers at St. Mary's for their comfort, guidance and prayers; the LHS class of '72 for 50 years of friendships and wonderful large and small reunions and, finally, to the many friends, family and countless others who have offered prayers for Kathy over the last 20 months. Those prayers have made a difference.
