COLUMBIA - Kathy Hickman Brown of Columbia died at home after a lengthy illness Monday morning, November 25, 2013. She was a painter and had been actively involved with the EBCO Studios group of local artists for a number of years until a significant decline in her health during the past several months. She was born July 2, 1953, at Lackland Air Force Base Hospital in San Antonio, Texas, where her father was stationed at that time. She has lived in Columbia continuously since 1960 when her family relocated to South Carolina. A graduate of Lower Richland High School Kathy continued her education at the University of South Carolina where she received Bachelor of Fine Arts and Master of Social Work degrees. She was married to James M. Brown, III December 22, 1972. She served as a counselor at Epworth Childrens' Home and as a cataloguer at the Garners Ferry Road Branch of the Richland County Library. She also worked at several art galleries including City Art. She was both an avid reader and student of the dramatic arts having been in the performing arts in high school and later playing roles with both Workshop and Trustus theaters. We wish to thank Dr. Andrew Kraft, Dr. Carolyn Britten, Tamara Bowman and Kathy Wamsley, all of Hollings Cancer Center for the compassionate care given to Kathy over the last four years and most recently Maxine Brown. Thank you also to the people of Hospice Care of S.C. for their loving care. Survivors include her husband, "Jimmy," of the home; her father, Bob Hickman of Elloree; sister, Melissa Barlow (David) of Fayetteville, N.C.; brother, Jamie Hickman of Elloree; foster son, Neil Nye (Maria) and their children of Longs, S.C.; mother-in-law, Betty Gluyas of Charlotte, N.C.; brother-in-law, Rob Brown (Karen) of Charlotte, N.C.; sister-in-law, Anne Ledford (Chuck) of Columbia and a number of nephews and nieces. The life of Kathy Hickman Brown will be celebrated at a gathering of family and friends in Columbia on Sunday, December 8, 2013, 3:00 p.m. at the home of longtime friends Jim and Debby Johnson. Memorials may be made to Hollings Cancer Center at MUSC, 86 Jonathan Lucas St, Charleston, SC 29425 or the charity of one's choice.
