Kathy Rogers Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Aria Cremation Service and Funeral Home - Preston Road on Apr. 15, 2023.

Kathy Rogers passed away peacefully on April 9, 2023. She was preceded in death by her parents, Benjamin and Harriet Fillmore, and brother Benjamin Fillmore. She is survived by sisters Jeanne Larson and Bitsy Lee, son Patrick Rogers, grandson Ethan Rogers, two nieces, and a nephew.
Kathy was known by her outward beauty, infectious laugh, dry sense of humor, and, most of all, her generous heart and compassion for "all creatures great and small." A lifelong lover of animals, she worked for the Dallas Zoo and consulted at the Dallas Aquarium and Busch Gardens, among many others. She ultimately founded The Rogers Wildlife Rehabilitation Center (RWRC) in 1989 at Samuel Farm in Mesquite, TX, which she devotedly built into the largest not-for-profit largest all-species avian rehabilitation and education center in North Texas.
Since its inception, RWRC has accepted, rehabilitated, and released many thousands of critters back into the wild. RWRC now only focuses on taking wounded or abandoned birds of any kind, but, historically it has helped anything with fins, fur, feathers or scales. Almost every animal that came through the gates of the facility was given a nickname that was uncannily spot on with its appearance or personality. "Dreamboat" Annie the Araucana Chicken, "Tom and Eddy" the Turkeys, "Brother" the Llama, and several black crows who were all known as "Russell." For those animals that could not be released, it was not uncommon for them to end up at Kathy's home as part-time or sometimes permanent companions.
Not only does RWRC provide second chances to animals in need, it was here that Kathy built a community centered on a love of animals. As a part of this community, volunteers of all backgrounds came together with a shared purpose, inspired by Kathy's welcoming nature and commitment. Kathy's work clearly demonstrated the type of positive change that is truly possible with a relatively small group of individuals united in a common mission.
Taken far too young, Kathy saved countless lives and souls and continued her calling to the end. For those lucky enough to have known her, she will be remembered for her passion, dedication, and kindness. She will be missed tremendously. Information about and donations to the Center can be made at: https://rogerswildlife.org.
Please leave the family condolences and share memories on this website.

Aww, miss Kathy... I volunteered for her when she was located at Samuel farm and spoke up for her at meeting before she relocated to Hutchins. She was a beautiful person, inside and out. We even visited each others houses. But then I moved to Las Vegas for several years and although I enjoyed my time there, I have returned to Texas and just found out about her passing today while looking her up on Facebook.
Until we meet again, Kathy, you are surely missed.

Imperfect though the symbolism may be, I like to think that the climbing hummer represents Kathy...

Some words for and to a very special Lady...

I would often find orphaned or injured animals since a long time ago. They were usually birds and I would call and call to find a rehab person to bring them to. Once I had a mourning dove and when I brought it, the rehabber said its disease was incurable and the bird must be put down. I brought my next find to Kathy before she had officially established Rogers Wildlife Rehabilitation Center. I believe it was she who told me that many rehabbers consider certain common birds to be "trash birds", and that the unfortunate mourning dove had Trichomoniasis, but it WAS curable. Kathy told me she would have treated it, and did not think lowlier of common birds. From that point in time, I was hers, never calling anyone else for rehab.

At least once Kathy chastised some children for throwing rocks at the birds - another point in her favor, in my book.

A natural scrounge, I was able to gather surplus materials from the huge factory in Mesquite where I worked, which Kathy repurposed as bird cages when she was working towards creating Rogers Wildlife Rehabilitation Center.

For decades I continued to bring all my birds there. Sometimes I got to help. I loved it. I remember one grackle that I held while Kathy cleaned the tar off his legs with Goo Gone.

So long Kathy, my friend. I miss you already, but expect to see you again. There will be animals there, in Heaven, and they will remember you, and talk. Bye, bye, Sweet. Jesus watch over you.

Yesterday I was telling someone about Kathy and the wonderful, life-saving work she did. Today I learned of her passing. My condolences to her family and to those who stood by her side helping our feathered (mostly) friends in their time of need.

As someone else said, an earlier comment by Allison Blankenship summed up my thoughts so well.

"No one would receive a larger welcome into heaven than Kathy, greeted by the flocks of thousands she once held in her hands."

Fly high, fly free.

I volunteered for several months in 2007 at Roger's Wildlife Rehabilitation Center . Kathy and her staff were so dedicated, and always had room in their hearts to take in 1 more bird. And, I'm sure it's added up to tens of thousands of birds over time. The day after I heard that Kathy had passed, I was leaving my house in the concrete jungle of a neighborhood I live in, and there was a female Bobwhite Quail in my driveway that was disoriented and couldn't have been more out of place. I managed to catch it, and take it down to her facility in Hutchins where they were of course more than willing to receive the bird into their care. Personally, I believe in signs from the other side, and that it wasn't just a coincidence this quail was at my house that is just 1 house among hundreds in my neighborhood. Maybe it was a message from Kathy that she wanted me to share with everyone that the work has to continue. When I took the bird to Roger's, I visited with some of the staff and it looks like her life's mission is in good hands on into the future. Please consider also honoring Kathy's memory by making any kind of donation you can to her rehab center.

"If you want to be inspired and to cry a few tears...."
This is how a friend began an email about Ms. Rogers, and a link to her obituary, and she was right.
Reading all the tributes, seeing the pictures, and learning the legacy of this amazing woman is an inspiration, and the tears did flow.
I was not familiar with the Rogers Wildlife Rehabilitation Center, but it sounds like a remarkable success story, created, written and lived by a woman who gave her all to her birds and was a treasured friend to many.
My sincere condolences to her family and friends.

What terrible news. I met Kathy 30? years ago. Animals were our common thread. Through the years her rehab center grew and grew. She steadfastly maintained her devotion to all of her injured friends who came to the center. We spoke weeks ago and had made tentative plans to get together. What a shock this is.......this world has lost one of the Best it had......going to miss you Kathy.......

Somewhere over the rainbow, bluebirds fly...birds fly over the rainbow, oh why then, oh why can't I?

Kathy whenever I think of you, or see any bird, my heart smiles. You took me and my beloved peacocks under your wing whenever we needed your expertise, and support. When I brought my first peacock/peahen to you, I was a fledging myself learning about them, but through my tears I listened and watched as you performed your magic; I was in awe. And for the next 17 years, you've patiently educated me; in fact, I can't count all the times I called you for advice, or for emergencies, many times through tears and you were always a pillar of strength and knowledge. Your AMAZING devoted staff, i.e., Mary and Kelly, and many others, like you have a servant's hear, dedicating your life to tending to these beautiful creatures. You all taught all of use SO much and WE LOVE YOU ALL so much. I am in shock, as the memories flood my mind and heart. I had to laugh thinking of one of many instances of you talking me through a crisis, you always found humor in the moment...esp., catching a hurt goose (dog attack) to bring to you, in a swampy area at White Rock Lake.....you stayed on the telephone with me, through the whole ordeal, coaching, pushing and yelling me on, until I caught the goose by hand, who would have certainly died a slow death otherwise. You instilled confidence to all of us, and in ALL the critters that were in your presence; your patients calmly and instinctively knew you were only there to help them and your faithful RWC staff. Kathy, you're wisdom and humor will never die....your spirit is now in every bird you rescued and in all of us who you mentored, as your legacy lives on Angel wings and in God's hands, until we meet again, my dear Kathy. In loving Memory, I will never forget you. All my love.

If happy little bluebirds fly, beyond the rainbow......why oh why can't I.

We brought Kathy hundreds of egrets and herons who travelled every year from South America to a rookery at UTSW Medical Center. She was always kind and supportive and worked hard to cure them with the goal of rehabbing and then releasing them, unless they were unable to fly, and then they would live out their lives at Rogers Rehab. She was truly an angel and the world is a little dimmer without her. She will be greatly missed, but she lives on in those who knew and loved her.

Kathy, you were the most knowledgeable person when people had question about birds. Ever since we brought you a duckling that had been left by its flock at our swimming pool, your phone number was on our list. You saved every bird we brought to you: more ducklings, a grackel with signs of poisoning, a turkey vulture with a broken wing, cedar waxwings that, drunk on berries, had flown into windows. This world is better because you were here. This world has more birds because you saved so many. I hope that your friends and volunteers will continue your work. You will be missed. I salute you.

There are those people who come into your life you know will live forever. Kathryn Rogers was that person. But she didn't live forever, at least not in human form. But man, did she ever live while she was here.
Kathryn (to so many she was Kathy, but to me, always Kathryn), devoted almost all her adult life to saving, rehabilitating, and releasing birds back to where they belonged... in the wild. She also rescued an occasional squirrel or raccoon. (Shout out to Skippy and Toon). For many of you, that's where her legacy stops. But if you really knew her, you know her legacy included the saving of people, as well.
In a period of my life where I truly felt lost, Kathryn introduced me to The Secret Garden and brought me lovingly (and occasionally sternly) into the fold of, as we so often fondly referred to it, The Isle of Misfit Toys. I fit right in. Kathryn didn't just save critters. She saved people. She and her staff took in over 5,000 birds of EVERY species every year for nearly 40 years. NO bird was turned away... ever. Every sparrow, starling, bluejay and eagle found love and healing at Rogers Wildlife Rehabilitation Center. And so it was with people.
For those who think she had nerves of steel to go with that heart of gold, you'd be right... mostly. But believe me when I tell you she worried over every soul; bird, mammal, or human. And as much as she thrilled in releasing them, her heart broke just a little every time she let one go. She always told me, "I know what's waiting out there for them." Hers was a life of healing and releasing. By its very definition, the most rewarding and heartbreaking all wrapped into one package.
I always referred to Kathryn as the Jane Goodall of the bird world. She was an exceptional human being in life, and I can assure you, I'll talk to her every day in death. She didn't leave. She only died.
If you do the exponential math, you know Kathryn was responsible for trillions of bird lives. And with their little souls is where hers now lives. And I suspect that's where she's happiest. But for us, the pain of release is so very real and we know how she felt every time she let something go.
Until later, Kathryn. The golden thread is in tact.
Love,
Matthew

Kathy Rogers has left the bounds of earth, after a lifetime of love and care for creatures of all sorts. Kathy and I were coworkers at Samuell Farm in the 1980s and friends for more than 38 years. Many of my best adventures were in Kathy's company: observing surgery on a great horned owl with a broken wing, riding with a pelican in the back seat of Kathy's car while she drove to the vet's office, traveling exhibits with education birds. Kathy's compassion, dedication, and determination was unmatched. Every creature came with humans that needed advice, patience, and comfort. Kathy truly was kind and compassionate to people too. The last time I visited with Kathy she was excited about improvements at the center. She had a way of getting things done - pulling in this person or company to make things better for the critters. I learned something new and worthwhile every time we were together. God bless her phenomenal staff as they go forward. Rest in peace dear friend.

Kathy Rogers has a permanent place in the heart of Dallas bird lovers. She has helped me for 25 years. Once I brought her 5 newly hatched ducks AND their mother, who Kathy said would be easy to catch. To my surprise she was right. Nobody did it better. The wings around her now belong to her.

I only knew Kathy from Facebook posts, after she took in the only surviving barn owl chick a few years ago, have been following her ever since. I especially loved the Maggie stories, no one could tell them like her. This is a tremendous loss, she will be greatly missed, my condolences to her family and the organization.

The world has lost a fierce warrior for wildlife. Her work was amazing, and her dedication to her mission was awe inspiring. She never wavered in her determination to do what was right. There are countless birds flying high today thanks solely to Kathy's work. I'm devastated by this loss.

So hard to find words when you just don´t want to believe the news. Kathy was as beautiful on the outside as on the inside. She was genuine. True dedication to educate and mentor the humans and to restore the many animals that came to her. You were an original Kathy! We will miss you!! Thank you to her family who shared her with us.

Kathy was an incredible human. My love for Birds drew me to her and her facility. While I lived in Texas, I had the wonderful privilege of working at Rogers Wildlife Rehabilitation, Inc. and getting to know Kathy. After moving back to Colorado, we kept in contact, and every time I came to Texas, I would go work with her. There are no words to say how much you will be missed.

Shocked but not surprised. When someone as special as Kathy comes along, you have to know that they will get reassigned in the bigger picture sooner than later. They are here for a short while and then they get called by the Universal Spirit. Kathy is with the angels now. Until we meet again.

I'm in shock and in tears. She was also my hero and I looked forward every day to see her humourous posts about her animals. She never got to publish her book that she had been working on. I hope someone will continue her work. I will mist Kathy so much.. It's till hard to believe. Prayers for the family and everyone.

Sometimes in this world, people come along who are truly unique, inspirational, and charismatic. You admire them, respect them and feel drawn to them for their passion, dedication and knowledge. Kathy was such a person. Like a pebble thrown into a pond, the effects of her life force rippled out from her into the community. I only had the privilege to meet her twice and yet, it was easy to see how special she was. The world was made a little better by her. How many of us can say that? She will be missed.

Kathy and her team received an injured peregrine falcon into their care in 2016. She spent a few months in Texas receiving treatment with Kathy as I waded through provincial, state and the federal bureaucracy of 2 countries to bring her home to Canada to complete her rehabilitation and it was hoped her eventual release back into the wild. Kathy was unflagging in her support for her patient and even accompanied her north to make sure she got home safely. And while our peregrines regularly visit Texas on their southward and northward migrations, no others have needed Kathy's care but it was nice to know that she and RWRC were nearby, ready and willing if the need arose. Our deepest condolences to her family, friends, colleagues and her team. It is fitting that Kathy's legacy lives in every creature she helped return to the wild.
