Katelyn (Katie) Joann Johnston Edgin, 32, of Grapeland, Texas, passed in the arms of her husband, Matt, in their home on the morning of May 29, 2024. She was born on December 19, 1991, in Crockett, Texas to her mother Denine McCain Gibbins, and father Jimmy Johnston.
Katie graduated from Latexo High School in 2010. She went on to earn a Bachelor of Arts in English from Sam Houston University in 2013 and a Masters of English at University of Texas at Tyler in 2021. Katie was a beloved English teacher for Conroe ISD, Spring ISD, and Sealy ISD and worked as a Master Teacher for the last four years at Crockett ISD.
It is impossible to sum Katelyn up into a mere few sentences. Katie Edgin was known for her eloquence, creativity, and her love of teaching. To her students, she was known as a cheerleader, believer, and the positive influence many needed. She had a deep appreciation of the eerie and the mysterious, finding great joy in horror films and the macabre. Despite the many trials and tribulations she faced, Katelyn was fearless, devoted, strong, and unapologetically herself. She welcomed every new door in her life with a smile and "challenge accepted." As she would say, "I am the master of my fate: I am the captain of my soul" and she lived by that in every endeavor.
Katie is survived by husband and perfect soul mate, Matthew Edgin; her always faithful canine companion, Addie; parents, Denine and Daniel Gibbins and Jimmy Johnston; brother, Daniel Gibbins and wife Kendra, sisters, Graycie Holcomb and husband William, Maggie Gibbins; grandparents, Sarah Dunn, Dennis McCain and Geraldine Stapp; mother-in-law, Janice Rodell; father-in-law, Jerry Edgin and wife Laurie; grandparents-in-law, Tom and Mary Holmes; sisters-in-law, Mallory Burns and husband Cord, Taelor Abbott and husband, Ethan; brother-in-law, Dustin Young; father-in-law, Ron Meadows and wife Gina; sister-in-law, Macy Mcpheron and husband, Rob; brother-in-law, Weston Rushing and wife, Vanessa; aunts, Connie
McCain, Jessica Ingle and husband, James, Cindy Page and husband, Elbert; uncles, Leroy Gibbins and wife, Nancy, David Gibbins, Tommy Holmes and wife, Julie, Robert Johnston and wife, Brenda; special cousins, Arra and Nereyda Novak; nieces and nephews, Piper, Tessa, Seis (due August), Jadyn, Bret, Bryce, Ellis Rae, Coy, Kye, Lou Lynn, Cannon, Valor and Jackson; a world of loving family members, friends and co-workers; Katie especially loved her "Twin Peaks Family".

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Katie Johnston Edgin, c/o Citizens National Bank, 1320 East Loop 304 Crockett, TX 75835 for a future scholarship fund.

Ms. Johnston was the one of the best teachers I´ve ever had. She was always so happy and energetic. I always hated English but she made it so much fun. I was so sad when I found out the news. I always looked forward to her class every day even tho I had her at the end of the day and everyone was ready to go home. There aren´t enough words to describe how amazing she was. You will be missed Ms. Johnston.

I learned to be me and to not care what others think because I am who I am. Katie was always true to herself and never once apologized for it.

Katie walked into my classroom at Brazos HS, where I taught floral design, and asked me to help her create a flower crown for Ren Fest. The rest was history. She became my favorite coworker, best friend, and neighbor for a time.
