"It is God who released me from the cares of this world. Each of us has an appointed time to leave this earth, and mine has come. Do not grieve for me, we will meet again."
Kelly Lynn Sawyer was born on April 5, 1969, to Jacqueline Sawyer Davis and the late Edward Joyner in Newport News, Virginia. On October 8, 2024, Kelly peacefully transitioned from this life. He was preceded in death by his father, Edward Joyner; great-grandparents, Otha and Lola Sawyer; grandparents, Harry and Louise "Biggie" Rogers; and his beloved uncle, Tyrone Walker.
Kelly grew up in Newport News, Virginia, where he attended Newport News Public Schools and graduated from Ferguson High School in 1987. At the age of four, he joined St. Johns Church of God in Christ with his mother, sparking a lifelong passion for media production. His work with the church's media team as a teenager inspired a successful career as a media technician. Throughout his adult life, Kelly honed his skills in audiovisual production, working across the country in various capacities.
His career took him from coast to coast, where he played vital roles in managing the technical elements of conferences, events, and conventions. Kelly's talents led him to work in major cities such as Chicago, Tampa, and beyond, thus allowing him to share his expertise nationally. His ability to set up, manage, and execute audiovisual systems made him a sought-after technician in the industry. Eventually, his passion for media brought him back to Virginia, where he spent his latter years working as a Lead Technician for Encore AV at Kingsmill Resort in Williamsburg, Virginia.
In addition to his career, Kelly was deeply devoted to his family. No matter where his work took him, he maintained close connections with his loved ones, often sharing thoughtful messages, memories, and reflections on social media. He took great pride in his family history and loved to share stories of past generations with relatives, both young and old.
Kelly is survived by his loving mother, Jacqueline Sawyer Davis; his sisters, Allison J. Davis and Monique Street; his brother, Alton Davis Jr. (Tina); his children, Christopher Sawyer, Kierra Sawyer, and Zaria Sawyer; his grandchildren, Jonathan "JD" Waldon and Jehovah-Raah "Hovah" Sawyer. He also leaves behind his cherished aunt, Deborah Walker; special God-sister, Taliya "Tink" King; close friends Catherine, Robin, Shanesha, Wyatt; and a host of relatives and dear friends who will forever hold his memory in their hearts.
Kelly's legacy of service, dedication, and love for family and craft will be fondly remembered by all who knew him. Though his work on this earth is complete, his memory and impact will live on through the lives he touched and the stories he leaves behind.
It is the desire of the Sawyer family hat you keep them in your thoughts and prayers.
