Ken Burrows Obituary
Obituary published on Legacy.com by Chagnon Funeral Home Inc. on Dec. 16, 2025.
Kenneth Burrows, age 81, of Onaway, passed away on Monday, December 15, 2025, at McLaren Northern Michigan Hospital in Petoskey. He was born in Onaway on July 30, 1944, the son of Thomas and Violet (VanHuysen) Burrows.
Ken was blessed with 57 years of marriage, having wed Audrey Mitteer on July 1, 1967, at the Free Methodist Church parsonage in Onaway. They made their home in Onaway where they raised their children and were well-known in the community. Ken worked at the Onaway Discount Store for many years as well as working locally as a lawn service contractor.
Growing up in Onaway, Ken was deeply rooted in the traditions of hunting and fishing. From an early age, he embraced the outdoors, finding joy and fulfillment in spending time in the woods and on the waters of Northern Michigan. His passion for hunting and fishing extended well beyond mere recreation; these pursuits also provided meals for his family. Whether tracking deer through the forest or casting his line into a favorite fishing spot, throughout his life, Ken cherished every opportunity to enjoy nature's bounty. And though he didn't bag his buck this past deer season, he was simply happy to spend time in the deer blind and soak in the peaceful surroundings.
Ken was a hands-on person who could often be found working on small projects in his garage. He took pride in staying active around his home, whether it involved painting, tinkering, or keeping the lawn neatly trimmed. His willingness to help extended into the community, where he spent considerable time at the VFW Post. There, Ken made sure the grounds were well-kept by mowing the lawn and offering his assistance whenever there was a need. He also enjoyed playing pool and was a member of the Men's Senior Pool League for the Onaway Bar.
A familiar face at Woodwinds, Ken arrived early each morning to enjoy a cup of coffee. On some days, he would head back home to pick up Audrey so they could have coffee together later in the morning. When the VFW was open for breakfast, Ken could usually be found there, savoring his coffee in the company of friends. Woodwinds was also Ken and Audrey's favorite place to dine, and no other restaurant ever measured up to it in their eyes. Ken especially appreciated how welcome he felt there and was known for his friendly banter with the waitresses.
Ken and Audrey shared a special bond that was evident to all who knew them. They were inseparable companions, like two peas in a pod, enjoying the simple pleasures of life together. Side by side, they watched old Westerns on television- and though he would never admit it, he enjoyed the Hallmark Christmas movies that Audrey loved to watch during the holiday season. They enjoyed going out together, whether it was sharing a meal at Woodwinds, going to Bingo or their morning coffee ritual. Audrey's passing left and emptiness in his life and he missed her immensely over this past year.
Ken will be remembered for his laid-back personality and sense of humor. With his easygoing nature he loved joking around. He was devoted to his wife, Audrey, and deeply loved his children, guiding them with patience and care. Ken was committed to instilling in them the values of hard work and respect for others and was proud of the adults they became.
Ken will be missed by all who knew and loved him. He touched many lives-from his family and close friends to the broader Onaway community. His helpful nature and dedication to his loved ones will be remembered fondly.
Ken leaves his son, Joe (Patty) Burrows and daughter, Mary "Tonda" Burrows, daddy's girl, both of Onaway; sisters, Mary Hawley and Donna Chaskey, both of Afton; and brother, Vance Burrows of Onaway. He is also survived by his brothers-in-law, Ed Apfel of Troy, Terry Young of Roseville, and Mike Marshall of Onaway; nieces and nephews; as well as those special people who were a significant part of his life and meant the world to him.
Ken was preceded in death by his wife, Audrey, on December 31, 2024; grandson, Thomas R. Burrows; sister, Clara Apfel; sisters-in-law, Joyce Burrows, Margaret Schoolcraft, Evelyn Young, Diana Mitteer, and Judy Lyons; and brothers-in-law, Mike Hawley, Sonny Chaskey, Samuel Mitteer, Jr., and Marvin Middaugh.
