Richard McAnear Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Nelsons Cremation & Funeral Services - Gaylord on Jan. 22, 2026.
Richard Newton McAnear, age 64, passed away on January 19, 2026, at his home in Afton, Michigan, surrounded by his loving family. Richard was born on September 1, 1961, in Athens, Texas, the son of the late Edward and Cleo McAnear.

Richard was the beloved husband of Nicole McAnear, with whom he shared countless sun-drenched days sailing the lakes and taking long walks on the beach. He was the father of Kathryn (Rance) Hopkinson of Farwell, Michigan, Ashley Osborne of Texas, and Jon McAnear of Texas. He was also the grandfather of Ann Marie Green, Christopher Green, and Beau Hopkinson.

In addition to his immediate family, Richard's legacy is carried on by his brother, Revis McAnear, his mother-in-law, Margo Hoogstraten, his in-laws Heather Gibson and Donnie Poole, and his nieces Morgan Joseph, Samantha Joseph, Kayla Switzer, Finn Poole, along with many other nieces, nephews, and dear friends, also survive him. Richard was preceded in death by his parents, his siblings, Robin McAnear, Rex McAnear, and his granddaughter, Danielle Hopkinson.

Raised and educated in Odessa, Texas, Richard's work ethic and handyman nature led him to a fulfilling career. For over a decade, he dedicated his skills as a metrologist at Tube Fab Roman Engineering in Afton, Michigan, where his attention to quality and detail was highly valued. His professional journey also included his prior work at CSP in Petoskey and time at the Onaway Car Lot, where his personable manner and integrity were well respected.

Away from work, Richard found solace and joy in the sun and out on the water. He recently created his own sawmill operation at his home to cut timber for siding. Richard's love for travel took him to many places, but he found equal pleasure in simple moments, like feeling the warmth of the sun on his face or the thrill of a scenic motorcycle ride.

Those who knew Richard would describe him as not just loving and generous, but also remarkably handy. He had a talent for fixing what was broken and improving what was not, both in the physical world and in the lives he touched. Above everything, his wife and family were first and foremost in his life.

A celebration of Richard's life will be held on June 13, 2026, with further details of time and location to be announced.

You always did the cool things with me, whether that be Riding for wheelers, dirt bikes and taking me on the bike for a ride. Too playing videogames with me and just chatting.

I will miss you and I hope you're no longer in pain.

Love
Finn
