Kenneth A. Carlson, a dedicated educator, beloved family man, and respected veteran, passed away peacefully at home on August 9, 2025, with his family by his side. He was born on December 5, 1940, in Coeur d'Alene, Idaho, and dedicated his life to serving others through teaching, military service, and community involvement.

Ken started his journey in education following his graduation from Coeur d'Alene High School in 1958 and from Pacific Lutheran University with a degree in Biology in 1963. He further enhanced his knowledge by earning a Masters in Education from Whitworth University. For 32 years, he taught Anatomy and Biology at West Valley High School, where he also served as the science department head. His passion for teaching inspired countless students, and he was known for his hard-working nature, kindness, and great sense of humor.

In addition to his accomplishments in education, Ken bravely volunteered for the army in 1964. After graduating from Officer Candidate School in April 1965, he served as an infantry platoon leader assigned to the 1st Division, during which time he was deployed to Vietnam. For his valor, he was awarded the Bronze Star and the Vietnamese Cross of Gallantry. After his tour, Ken was stationed at Fort Ord in 1966, where he trained troops until his honorable discharge in 1967.

Ken cherished his family above all, marrying the love of his life and soul mate, Bernita Lien, in 1967. Together, they raised three sons—Erik, Brandon, and Chad—whom he was he was very proud and always eager to share of their accomplishments. Ken could often be seen supporting his sons and later his grandchildren at various events, from sporting competitions to music recitals. He treasured each moment spent with family, creating memories that would last a lifetime.

Those who knew Ken will remember him as an active individual who enjoyed a variety of hobbies and interests. He was passionate about hunting, fishing, shooting, woodworking, and ATVing in the mountains. His love for family and friends brought joy to his social life, and throughout his retirement he remained a supportive figure, always there to offer good advice.

Ken is survived by his beloved wife Bernita; his sons Erik, Brandon, and Chad; daughters-in-law Juliette, Cami, and Katie; and grandchildren Jonathan, Jeremy, Faith, Lukas, Kai, Eli, Lilla Falun and Inga. He is preceded in death by his sister, Mona Jacobson.

Kenneth A. Carlson will be remembered for his unwavering support of his family, his steadfast faith in the Lord, his dedication to education, and his service to his country. His legacy of kindness, hard work, and humor will continue to inspire all who were fortunate enough to know him.

A celebration of Life will be held on Saturday, Sept.13th at 10:30a at Peace Lutheran Church in Post Falls. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests monetary gifts to Lutherhaven Ministries in memory of Ken's devotion to the church.
