Kenneth Charles Cunningham, affectionately known as Cheese or Kenny, passed away peacefully at home on July 17, 2024. Born on August 27, 1953, in Sunflower, KS, Kenneth was the cherished only child of Betty and Charles Cunningham.
The family later moved to
Kansas City, MO, where Kenneth attended Kensington Elementary School and Southeast Jr. High School. After his mother remarried, Kenneth gained a brother, Jackie Robinson, and four sisters, Diane Jones, Lucille Wilson, Rosemary Robinson, and Sandra Kay Peterson. He began his high school education at Southeast High School before transferring to De La Salle High, where he continued his studies.
Following his high school years, Kenneth enlisted in the Army and served his country with honor during the Vietnam War. Upon returning home, he embarked on a long and fulfilling career with Burlington Northern Railroad. It was during this time he met the love of his life, Vanessa, and they married on October 4, 1980. Their union was blessed with two daughters, Fallon and Ashley. Kenneth and Vanessa shared a deep and enduring love, being married for nearly 44 years and together for almost 47 years. Their connection grew stronger with each passing day, a testament to their unwavering bond and devotion to one another.
After nearly 27 years with Burlington Northern Railroad, Kenneth's passion for the railroad eventually led him to achieve his dream of becoming a railroad engineer, a role he embraced with pride and dedication. Later, he transitioned to various trucking companies, traveling the country for a decade.
Kenneth's warmth and generosity were evident in his love for cooking, a passion he inherited from his mother. Kenneth's sweet potato pies, macaroni and cheese, and rum cake, renowned for their deliciousness, were staples at holidays and gatherings, bringing joy to everyone who tasted them. His culinary delights were a reflection of his generous spirit and his desire to bring happiness to others.
An avid sports fan, Kenneth delighted in watching his beloved Kansas City Chiefs, especially their rise to the Super Bowl. He was a true foodie, always eager to try local cuisine from nearby establishments. Mornings and afternoons were cherished moments spent enjoying coffee and green tea with friends and family, fostering a sense of community and connection.
Kenneth had a zest for life that extended to his love for motorcycles. As a proud Harley Davidson owner and a member of the Street Elite Bikers Club, he found camaraderie and adventure riding with his bike brothers. His numerous badges symbolized the stories and experiences he treasured from his time with the club.
Kenneth was the kind of person who would be there for you, day or night. As a protector of his family and friends, he consistently defended kindness and decency. His generous spirit, kind nature, and unwavering loyalty left an indelible mark on all who knew him. Kenneth's radiant smile could light up any room and remains a cherished memory for his friends and family.
His children, Fallon and Ashley, remember a father who was active and supportive in their life pursuits, a constant source of encouragement and love. Kenneth was a special part of their lives, always present with a listening ear, a guiding hand, and a heart full of love.
Kenneth is survived by his wife, Vanessa Cunningham; his two daughters, Fallon Cunningham and Ashley Cunningham; his sisters, Diane Jones and Sandra Kay Peterson; his brother, Jackie Robinson; his grandchildren, Tayana Brown, Ariyah Brown, and Gianna Brown; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, Betty Robinson and Charles Cunningham, his beloved aunts, Francis Harris and Ruby Cunningham, and his sisters, Rosemary Robinson and Lucille Wilson.
His legacy of love, generosity, and unwavering kindness will live on in the hearts of all who had the privilege of knowing him.
Funeral Services will be held Wednesday, July 31, 2024, 10:30am at Watkins Heritage Chapel. Visitation from 9:30am-10:30am at the chapel. Interment Leavenworth National Cemetery, Leavenworth, Kansas. Services conducted by Watkins Heritage Chapel. Condolences may be shared on our website.
