Kenneth Donald Floyd passed away on the morning of April 9, 2022, at 81 years old peacefully in his family's home of Canon, GA.
Donald was born on April 2, 1941, in the Goldmine community of Hart County, GA. His parents were the late Robert Clayton and Bessie Weaver Floyd and he was the seventh son of ten children in his family. He continued to grow up in the Goldmine community with his family and attended Goldmine Elementary and Royston High School, playing football, baseball and basketball. He graduated from Royston High School in 1959 and while there, he met the love of his life, Eddie Kay King, who he later married. They would have celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary on September 29, 2022.
After graduating from Royston High School, Donald joined the United States Coast Guard, attending boot camp in Cape May, NJ. After completion, he was stationed in Key West, FL, and later graduated from the US Coast Guard Academy in New London, CT, with a focus in business. Upon graduation, he was stationed in Brunswick, GA. During his time in Brunswick, he would frequently hitch hike back to Royston to see his family and future wife. He received an Honorable Discharge in 1961, returning home to marry Miss King and beginning his lifelong tenure at 1st Franklin Financial in Elberton, GA.
While in Elberton, he and his wife welcomed their first child, Kenneth Donald "Donnie" Floyd, Jr. in July of 1963. Donald was then promoted to manager of the 1st Franklin Financial Bremen, GA branch and moved there with his family. There he was President of Bremen Jaycees, was active in the Bremen Merchant's Club and attended Bremen First Methodist Church. During this time, he attended Woodrow Wilson Law School in Atlanta, GA. While in Bremen, Donald's family welcomed their second child, Phyllis Kasie Floyd, later Freeman, in 1968.
In 1970, Donald was promoted to supervisor at 1st Franklin and would later supervise offices throughout the entire states of Georgia and Tennessee. Donald worked for 1st Franklin for 46 years, serving the company well. In his own words, "he would never have to back up for a paycheck". In 1973, Donald's family would relocate back home and reside in Canon, GA until his passing.
While working full-time and upon retirement, he owned and operated a cattle farm, faithfully served as a Trustee for Poplar Springs Methodist Campground, and was an active member of Gaines Chapel Methodist Church serving as a Sunday School Teacher, Trustee, as well as many other positions of leadership. In 1985, Donald was a charter member and assisted in the formation of Five Area Volunteer Fire Department, serving as Treasurer for 37 years. He was an avid Georgia Bulldog Fan, attending games all his adult life with his family and friends, forming relationships centered on their love for the game of football. Donald attended the 1981 National Championship game with his son Donnie and friends and watched the 2022 National Championship game with his wife. Donald loved his country and was a devoted patriot and conservative, proudly participating in local, state and national politics in any way he could. He would often write letters to Georgia Representatives, U.S. Senators, and U.S. Presidents regarding causes he was passionate about. He was a devoted "Pepa" to his two grandchildren, Sara and Will, and attended every baseball game, tennis match and event that they ever participated in. He enjoyed spending his free time going to the lake and vacationing at Tybee Island with his family, all the while making jokes every chance he had. He was a devoted friend, husband, father and grandfather.
Donald was preceded in death by his parents; his brothers, Andrew, Roscoe, Hugh, Mack, Gene and Jerry; his sisters, Ruth, Mattie Pearl and Ida; his son, Donnie; and his nephew, Chad Floyd.
Donald is survived by his wife, Eddie Kay Floyd; his daughter and son-in-law, Kasie Floyd and Scott Freeman; his two grandchildren, Will and Sara Freeman; his sisters-in-law, Joyce and Shelby Floyd; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services for Donald will be held in the Gaines Chapel United Methodist Church at 3:00 p.m. on Monday, April 11, 2022, with Rev. Brad Thompson and Rev. Don Nestor officiating. Interment will be in the church cemetery.
The family will receive friends at Pruitt Funeral Home from 1:00 until 2:30 on Monday afternoon. At other times, the family will be at the home.
Pallbearers will be Barry Thornton, Sam Waller, Steve Wiggins, David Wiggins, Ron Miller and Norman Holley. Honorary pallbearers will be Bobby Buffington, Pat Franks and Five Area Volunteer Fire Department.
