It is with profound sadness that the family of Kenneth Arthur Gural, 70, announces his passing on October 22, 2025, surrounded by family. Born on October 1, 1955, to (Ian) Jack Gural and Beverly Marion Gural (nee Rody), he enjoyed a childhood in Silver Spring, MD, enriched with academics, art, music, building, and exploration. These formative years instilled a lifelong love of learning and inquiry, shaping him into a brilliant, thoughtful man who approached every challenge with creativity and an insatiable desire to understand how things worked.
Ken's keen intellect propelled him through a B.A. in Physics at Princeton University and an M.S. at the University of Maryland, where he forged a lifelong friendship with Ron Cowen. He started his career as a patent searcher, where he frequented the US Patent and Trademark Office and met Hoa, who would become his cherished wife. Shortly thereafter, he formed his own patent research firm, PATENTEC LLC, which he ran for over three decades, combining his passion for science and technology with his professional expertise.
An intelligent, curious, and optimistic soul, Ken pursued lifelong endeavors in mathematics, physics, and language in his spare time. He also found tremendous joy in tending his vast and vibrant garden at his home in Clifton, VA, teaching others, cracking jokes, and spending time with his family and friends. He was also generous - throughout his life, he donated over 10 gallons of blood. In his final months, he gratefully received the same gift he had given so freely to others.
Ken was deeply loved by his devoted wife, Hoa Tran Gural; his children, Victoria Ressy (Alejandro), My-Ly Andrews (Hunter), Albert Gural, and Genevieve Gural; his grandchildren, Teagan, Owen, Min, and Dalia; his sister, Karen Walant (nee Gural), and his beloved cousin, Carol Finkelstein. He was predeceased by his parents and his sister, Janice Wherry (nee Gural).
