Kenneth R. Johnson, Sr., age 80, of Winchendon and formerly of South Dennis passed away at Heywood Hospital on Friday, April 18, 2025, with his family at his side.
Ken was born in Lewiston, Maine to Richard E. Johnson and Corrinne (Roy) Johnson.
At a young age Ken's family moved to
Natick, MA, where he and his 3 younger brothers grew up. Ken graduated from Natick High School and Newbury College. Ken was a veteran of the Vietnam War, proudly serving as a CT3 on the USS Oxford AGTR1. He was retired from the Cape Cod Times.
Ken was loving husband of Katherine (Donovan) Johnson for 51 years and is also survived by his daughter Megan Warfield, her husband Bill and his beloved grandson, Cameron. Ken is also survived by many family members and dear friends.
Ken was predeceased by his son, Kenneth R. Johnson, Jr in 2024.
Ken's sibling brothers; Douglas, Gary and Bruce also predeceased him.
Ken and his family moved to Dennis, MA in 1985 and enjoyed Cape League Baseball games, long walks, especially on West Dennis Beach and Route 6A, participating in road races, as well as exploring Cape Cod with his family. Ken was actively involved in his community and served on the Dennis Recreation Committee from 1993-1998. In 2006, Ken established the non-profit, Friends of Dennis Recreation, as a way to fund the Dennis Road Race, with proceeds from the race being allocated to help support recreation needs of the people of Dennis through the purchase of equipment, disbursement of scholarships for Dennis students and sponsorship of youth basketball and softball teams, support to Friends of Dennis Senior Citizens, and financial aid to participants of Dennis summer recreation programs. He remained with the Friends of Dennis Recreation until 2018. He was also one of the organizers of the Dennis Road Race which he enjoyed for many years. In 2019, Ken and his wife, Kate, moved to Winchendon, MA where he spent many hours enjoying his time with his grandson, Cameron.
He was a sports enthusiast, who watched every sport there was, from basketball, baseball, golf, to track and field. Ken supported his children Kenny and Megan, while traveling to many cross-country meets, golf tournaments, softball, and field hockey games. He enjoyed going on adventures and traveling with his wife, Kate, which included trips to Maine and South Carolina, exploring lighthouses and having lunch at the beach. He also painted seascapes that they photographed during their travels.
Ken will be remembered for his kindness, generosity, inspirational quotes and his devotion to his family and friends.
Relatives and friends are kindly invited to attend a Funeral Mass in St. Patrick Church 44 East Central Street (rt. 135) Natick on Friday May 2nd at 10am. Followed by burial at St. Patrick Cemetery Natick.
