Kenneth Clay McDonald, a beloved figure in the Richmond County community, gracefully left us on December 26, 2024, at the age of 74. Born on May 19, 1950, in Richmond County, North Carolina, Ken left an indelible mark through his service as an educator and coach, as well as a passionate entrepreneur, touching the lives of many along the way.

Ken pursued an education that set a strong foundation for his impactful career. After graduating from Rockingham High School in 1968 where he proudly served as Student Body President, he continued to cultivate his knowledge at Appalachian State University before obtaining a B.A. in Biology from Pembroke State University in 1973. This educational journey paved the way for an illustrious career in teaching.

After dedicating 25 years to Richmond County Schools, Ken retired in 2013. Known affectionately as "Mr. Mac," he made an unforgettable impression on his 9th-grade Physical Education students. His passion for coaching shone brightly as he led the Girls Softball and Girls Volleyball teams to victory, including exhilarating wins against their storied rivals, the Rockingham Rockets. He was also celebrated as the head coach of Arthur's Bad News Bears Softball Club, fostering sportsmanship and camaraderie in the East Rockingham Church League for many years.

Beyond his teaching and coaching legacy, Ken was an entrepreneur at heart, owning and operating KMAC KENNELS for 22 years. Through his love for dogs, particularly German Rottweilers, Great Bull Mastiffs, and his cherished American Boxer, Ken connected with dog enthusiasts around the globe, further enriching his life with joy and purpose.

Those who knew Ken cherished his wonderful personality; he was known for his humor, kindness, and infectious laughter. A loving father, Ken is survived by his devoted daughters, Lucy Marguerite McDonald and Katie McDonald Webb (Bryan), grandchildren, Rusty Wadsworth, McDonald Cecil "Mac" Wadsworth, Issac Webb, great grandchildren, Colton Wadsworth and Elizabeth Wadsworth, along with many nieces. He also leaves behind his brother, Robert Cecil McDonald (Sally), who shared in this journey called life.

Although he is predeceased by his parents, Robert Cecil McDonald and Lucille Maner McDonald, and his brother, Richard Gary "Slim" McDonald, Ken's spirit will continue to shine through the lives he touched. His legacy will be carried forward by the many students he inspired, the athletes he encouraged, and the loved ones who hold him dear in their hearts.

A memorial service will be held by the family privately at a later date.

As we reflect on Ken's life, we are reminded of the laughter and love he brought to our world—a true champion both on and off the field.
