Kenneth R. Ritchison, a cherished member of the Sioux City community, passed away on July 19, 2025, at the age of 87 with his family at his bedside. Born on December 18, 1937, in Sioux City, Iowa, Kenneth was a lifelong resident of the area, known for his steadfast dedication to both his profession and his family.
Kenneth's career began in the labor force, working at the Swift and Armour packing plants, before he transitioned into the automobile industry as a used car salesman. His most fulfilling professional chapter began when he joined the Sioux City community schools, where he primarily served at East High School. He took great pride in his work, earning admiration and respect from colleagues, students, and parents alike. His tenure with the school district culminated in retirement in 2012.
A veteran of the United States Navy, Kenneth enlisted in 1955 and served his country with honor until his discharge in 1963. His military service instilled in him a sense of duty and discipline which permeated his personal and professional life.
Kenneth was a man of diverse interests and passions. He found immense joy in spending time outdoors, exploring nature, and fishing with his daughter, Shelly, and his grandsons. A true sports enthusiast, he was a devoted fan of the Iowa Hawkeyes, making it a point to watch or listen to every football and basketball game. Additionally, Kenneth had a spirited connection to horse racing, enjoying the excitement of “playing the horses” at local tracks and later following the races on simulcast television after close.
His love for family was paramount. He married Janice Kleinberg in August 1962, and together they celebrated the birth of their daughter, Shelly, in 1964. Kenneth took great pride in being a father and later a grandfather. He is survived by his daughter, Shelly (Bill) Posey; brother, Jerry (Judy) Ritchison; grandsons, Randy (Kim) Ritchison, William "Billy" Barnett (Jessica Shelton), Stephen (Ruby) Posey, and Geoffrey Posey; as well as his beloved great-grandchildren – Jonny and Beau Ritchison, and Carly and Avery Treft. Also mourning his loss are many cousins, nieces, and nephews who held him dear.
Kenneth was preceded in death by his wife, Janice; his parents, Paul and Edna Ritchison; sisters, Ionia and Iris; brothers, Kermit and Doyle; and an infant grandson.
A graveside service to honor Kenneth’s life and legacy will be held at Graceland Cemetery in Sioux City on July 30, 2025, at 11:00 AM. Kenneth R. Ritchison will be remembered as a devoted family man, a conscientious worker, and an individual who found joy in the simple pleasures of life. His spirit and love will continue to resonate within the hearts of those who had the privilege to know him.
