Kenneth Rundquist Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Justen Funeral Home & Crematory - McHenry on Mar. 11, 2026.
Kenneth Walter Rundquist passed away on March 7, 2026. Ken was born on July 13, 1940 in Oak Park, Illinois to the late Walter and Pearl (Hangebrauck) Rundquist. He was the oldest of five children. He attended Leyden High School in Franklin Park, Illinois and Illinois State University in Normal, Illinois.

Ken taught mathematics at Elk Grove High School in Elk Grove, Illinois for 42 years and, after retiring, taught at Elgin Community College in Elgin, Illinois. He enjoyed teaching so much that he frequently said that "he never worked a day in his life". He was also a tennis and basketball coach at Elk Grove High School.

Ken was a life-long Chicago Cubs fan and enjoyed meeting with friends in a fantasy baseball group each season. Ken was also a life-long fan of trains, particularly of the North Shore Line; grandfather Delbert Hangebrauck worked on the North Shore Line and Ken was lucky enough to be able to occasionally accompany Del to work. He also enjoyed gathering with friends to play bridge or chat over a meal. He took his dogs for regular walks through his neighborhood and in parks. Ken spent many quiet summer days at his house on Lake Shangri La in Wisconsin. He spent many of his retirement year winters at his winter home on Hilton Head Island in South Carolina.

Ken is survived by siblings Kathleen Rundquist of McHenry, Illinois, Linda Rundquist Parr of Nittedal, Norway, Larry Rundquist of Anchorage, Alaska, and Vicki Rundquist of McHenry, Illinois as well as brother-in-law Hugo Parr and three nephews, Erik Parr, Jan Walter Parr, and Leif Parr and their families in Norway.

Burial will be private. A celebration of life is tentatively planned for late May. In lieu of flowers, donations to Save-A-Pet or Illinois State University Foundation can be made in memory of Ken.

Arrangements have been entrusted to the Justen Funeral Home & Crematory, McHenry, IL. For information, please call the Funeral Home at 815-385-2400, or visit www.justenfh.com, where friends and loved ones may share memories of Ken on his tribute wall.
