Sheerin, Kenneth William
REXFORD - Kenneth William Sheerin, 97, died peacefully on December 8, 2025, knowing he was loved by so many. He was born in Brooklyn, N.Y., the son of the late William Churchill and Anne Catherine (Kane) Sheerin.
He grew up in Astoria, N.Y., and spent summers in Hyde Park, N.Y. Ken attended William Cullen Bryant High School. As a youngster, he was a great athlete and could be found playing ice hockey at Flushing Meadows Park or baseball on the sandlots in Queens.
Ken was drafted into the United States Army serving overseas in Japan and Korea. He was with the 45th Infantry Division in the 279th Regimental Combat Team, and served as a squad leader and forward observer for the heavy mortar company. He was promoted to Sergeant and received an honorable discharge. He was very proud of his service. He returned to the States and to the love of his life, Eugenia (Jean) M. Dalton, married in 1951, and began raising a family. He moved his family to Commack, N.Y., where he began working as the Deputy Director of Material Planning at Airborne Instruments Laboratory, a division of Eaton Corp., and then as Branch Manager for Systems Programming LTD, until his retirement.
Ken served as an Elder at both the Good Shepherd Presbyterian and Smithtown Presbyterian Churches, where he was also a member of "Bread for the World," a citizen's lobby group that worked to address hunger in the United States and Worldwide. Ken loved his music, and could often be found playing his albums on the Hi-Fi or listening to the radio. He loved to dance and sang in the Chorale. Ken was an animated storyteller and had a story for every occasion. When the Dodgers moved out of Brooklyn, Ken became a die-hard Mets fan for life, always hoping for that one more World Series title. He found joy in the simple things, and loved spending time, and traveling with his wife of 74 years, Jean. He made holidays special, especially Christmas, and showed up at sporting events, marching band competitions, school concerts, cheerleading events, graduations and awards ceremonies for his children and grandchildren. He was proud of all their accomplishments. Always the athlete, Ken continued playing sports throughout his life, playing softball and bowling on the church leagues and playing tennis and golf into his 90s. Ken was also quite the poker player and pool shark. Retiring to upstate N.Y., Ken was able to return to Saratoga, and enjoyed many summer days with family and friends at the Saratoga Racetrack, or the Saratoga Performing Arts Center.
Kenneth is survived by his wife, Eugenia (Jean) M. (Dalton) Sheerin; his daughters, Claire (Sheerin) Rymer (Laura Turano), Barbara (Sheerin) Reese (Scott Reese); his grandchildren, Scott and Erin Rymer, Kyle and Tyler Reese, and Jenna Murray; his great- grandchildren, Ashton, Zoe and Mack Rymer and Jazzlyn Hutchinson. He was predeceased by his daughters, Donna Lee Sheerin, Jeanne (Sheerin) Murray; granddaughter, Katherine Murray; and his brother, William Kenneth Sheerin. Ken lived a very full and dynamic life, and we are truly grateful that his life spanned so many seasons. So much time to love him, learn from him, and carry his stories forward. To his children, grandchildren and great grandchildren; "Mach Schnell." Rest in Peace.
Services will be held at the convenience of the family.
