It's an odd feeling to know that your days on this Earth are soon drawing to a close and that you have the opportunity to tell your story the way you want it told. Kent Grannis was granted that opportunity. This is his story. Kent was born March 19, 1972 to Daryl and Willa Grannis. He spent his childhood playing with trains on the farm, and watching copious amounts of Star Wars. During his years at Fleming County High School, his love of academic competition was fostered as an award winning member of the FCHS Academic Team. After graduating from the University of Kentucky, he married the love of his life, Lisa Story. They were married for 26 magical years and became the parents of their princesses, Leia Abigail and Ariel Lauren Grannis, who both inherited his quick-witted nature, and strong faith in God. Kent treasured the time he spent with his wife and daughters traveling to Disney World, attending sporting events, and Jimmy Buffett concerts.
He also leaves behind his beloved sister and brother in laws, Lori and Chris Florence. Lori was the "best little sister he could have ever had" and Chris was "always there to fix what he had torn up." Lori and Chris gave him the honor of being an Uncle Kenty to both Hannah and Caitlyn Florence. Kent was always grateful to be the brother of Carey Grannis and the proud uncle to Conner, Chase, and Creed Grannis. He wants each of these special people in his life to know how proud he was to be related to them. Kent also leaves behind a "bonus daughter", Emily Virgin and her two very special little girls, Ruby Arlowe Virgin and Ava Paige McClain. Those girls could not be any more grandchildren to him, than if they were of blood relation.
As a 28 year history teacher within the Fleming County School System, he often had the opportunity to regale his students with stories of his successes. Most notable were his appearances in finals of the NCAA "Rock, Paper, Scissors Final Four Competition", and in the 1996 Olympics where he helped his team earn a silver medal in the "Marco Polo Championships". To which he always claimed, "they were robbed because the Italians and Chinese both could lay claim to Marco Polo."
Kent was a longtime coach of the FCHS Academic Team, winning countless region titles and multiple trips to the State Quick Recall Tournament. In that time he has taken Quick Recall and Future Problems Solving Teams, as well as innumerable individuals to those competitions. Throughout those years, he's been granted a tremendous blessing to work with some of the "best and brightest" Kentucky has to offer. Kent was also the all time most winningest coach in any competition in Fleming County High School history. He was also fortunate enough to serve multiple terms on the KAAC (Kentucky Association for Academic Competition) board, and was currently serving as President. He was recently inducted into the KAAC Hall of Fame, an honor in which he was extremely proud. Kent was eternally grateful for his team, his teammates from years ago, and some of the best assistant coaches a person could ever ask for.
At the age of 52, Kent passed away Friday, December 13th, 2024, surrounded by love, the comfort of his home, and his wife and daughters. He was preceded in death by his maternal grandparents, Bill and Monnie Hall, his paternal grandparents, Gene Grannis and Lowell and Jean Sorrell. He was also preceded in death by his mother-in-law, Judy Story.
Visitation will be held Wednesday, December 18, 2024 from 5-8 p.m. at the Flemingsburg Christian Church.
