It is with deep sorrow that we announce the passing of John "Kevin" DeWitt age 65 of Wilmington, NC following a brief illness.
Kevin was born on August 31, 1960 in
Lancaster, Pennsylvania to the late Francis "Eileen" Lefever and Charles F. DeWitt. He passed away peacefully at the Dr. Robert M. Fales Hospice Pavilion - Lower Cape Fear LifeCare on Thursday February 19, 2026 with his family by his side.
Staff Sergeant John K. DeWitt served his country with honors in the USAF as a Missile Systems Analyst Specialist and Instructor while stationed at Malmstrom AFB in Great Falls, Montana. There he met the love of his life, Tina.
In his lifetime he was a brilliant and successful businessman. For over 32 years he was known as the "solutions man"; if there were any problems, Kevin would find a way to solve them.
As the President of DeWitt Systems, Inc., Kevin often had to "think outside the box" and come up with creative ways to solve complex issues. His skills were sought across many industries, including GE (GNF) in Wilmington, NC. Kevin especially found fulfillment in being able to train and help many young programmers get a start in their careers.
Before retiring in 2024 his business had migrated into the mining industry where Kevin developed a new innovative solution allowing for drillers to analyze, in real time, core samples and chips on site via a mobile scanning unit.
Kevin was a man of many talents and passions. While stationed in Montana he was a photographer for the Great Falls Tribune. He could always be found reading a sci-fi novel, strumming his guitar, listening to all types of music and making furniture for his kids' homes and for his grandkids. Our homes and hearts are filled with reminders of his generosity and love for his family.
In addition to his parents, Kevin is preceded in death by his step-father Harry A. Lefever and two siblings, his brother Shawn A. Lefever and sister Brenda J. Gockley.
Kevin is survived by his wife of nearly 44 years, Tina, his daughter Krista E. Karling (Christopher) of Leland NC, his son Darryl J. DeWitt (Abbie) of Hillsborough, NC and five grandchildren Johnathan and Haylee Karling and Vincent, Rosalyn and Iris DeWitt. Also surviving are 7 siblings: Patricia Wilds (Mike), Sherry DeWitt, Charles DeWitt (Tammy), Bret DeWitt, Brian DeWitt (Lorraine), Keith DeWitt, and Heidi Bushong (Jim), all residents of Lancaster County PA.
Celebration of Life services will be held on March 29, 2026 at the American Legion Post 129,
