Kevin Thayer Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by McWilliams Funeral Home - Alpena on Feb. 5, 2026.
Kevin Byron Lafayette Thayer, a cherished husband, father, grandfather, brother, and friend, passed away peacefully on February 4, 2026, in Posen at the age of 65. Born on January 25, 1961, in Flint to the late Byron and Edith (Haywood) Thayer, Kevin grew up with a passion for life that was evident to all who knew him.

On December 22, 1984, Kevin married the love of his life, Darla Wallace, and together they embarked on a journey filled with love, laughter, and the joy of raising a family. Their union was blessed with three wonderful children: Heather Thayer, Nicole (Glenn) Wisniewski, and Mason (Courtney) Thayer. Kevin's role as a father was one he cherished deeply, and his guidance and support shaped the lives of his children in countless ways.

Kevin's love for his family extended to his role as a grandfather. He took immense pride in his grandchildren: Guage, Allison (Matthew), Kayliana, Ivy, and Ben. Each of them held a special place in his heart, and he cherished every moment spent with them.

He is survived by his devoted wife, Darla; his loving children and grandchildren; his sister, Ruth McKown; and several nieces and nephews. Kevin was preceded in death by his sister, Marie Kauffman, whose memory he held dear.

Kevin's professional life was marked by his dedication to the martial arts. As a respected Karate sensei and a 2nd-degree black belt, he not only taught the techniques of the sport but also instilled the values of discipline, respect, and perseverance in his students.

Beyond his work, Kevin was a man of many interests. An avid hunter, he found solace in the great outdoors, and his knowledge of firearms was extensive. He had a particular fondness for whiskey and bourbon, and his presence was a staple at wild game dinners. Kevin was also an enthusiastic video gamer, a hobby that allowed him to connect with younger generations and stay young at heart.

Among his many talents, Kevin was renowned for making the best pumpkin bread, a treat that family and friends looked forward to with great anticipation.

Kevin's legacy is one of love and devotion. He was a man who lived his life with a generous heart, a warm smile, and an unwavering commitment to his family. Those who knew Kevin will remember him as a loving individual whose presence enriched their lives.

Kevin has been taken for cremation with a celebration of his life to be held at a later date. McWilliams Funeral Home has assisted the family.
