Darrell Lee Thayer, 67, completed his earthly journey peacefully at home on Friday, February 20, 2026, at 2:26 a.m. Guided by deep faith and unwavering duty to his family and God, Darrell lived a life centered on those he loved most—they were the driving force behind all he did.
Born in Flint, Michigan, on March 6, 1958, to the late G. Robert “Bob” and Rosalie Ann (Keller) Thayer. Darrell married Shawn Marie Iwen on May 2, 1981, in Saginaw, Michigan. Their 44-year marriage was a cornerstone of his life.
Darrell built a distinguished career in machining and industrial tools. Prior to machining, Darrell worked at Gobeyn’s of Bridgeport in the era of the full-service gas station. After high school, Darrell started working at Danti Tool and Die. While there he joined an apprenticeship program to become a journeymen machinist. He left Danti to work with his father-in-law, the late Ralph K. Iwen and bother-in-law, Ermin Sallmen to grow Iwen Tool Supply Company. Darrell later became the Iwen Tool Company president and worked for 38 years until his retirement in November 2025.
A committed community leader, Darrell believed deeply in Bridgeport. Over 25 years, he served in roles including board member of the Bridgeport-Spaulding Community School Board, treasurer of the Bridgeport-Birch Run Area Chamber of Commerce, member of the Downtown Development Authority, and the Bridgeport Township Water Board. He served several years on the Bridgeport Township Board as trustee and briefly, as interim Township Supervisor.
Darrell excelled at mentorship, quietly guiding many in both the church and workplace. Though he had two natural sons, he “adopted” many others who needed a father figure, encouraging them to center their careers and families on Jesus while working hard. A steadfast man of faith and a reliable anchor, he was always available for a listening ear and took great pride in the men they became.
Above all, Darrell was a devoted family man. His children and grandchildren brought him immense joy. He cherished time in Florida and at the family cabin, boating on “Bad Temper,” snowmobiling, grilling steaks (better than most restaurants) and playing Yahtzee (often “talking” to the dice). Weekends up north in Gaylord with Shawn was his favorite escape.
A faithful member of Saginaw Valley United Pentecostal Church for over 50 years, Darrell was a giver, encourager, and prayer warrior. He firmly believed in redemption and salvation through the name of Jesus.
Darrell is survived by his beloved wife of 44 years, Shawn; sons Darrell Travis (Candis) Thayer and Kyle (Janessa) Thayer; grandchildren Matheson, Charles, Arianna, and Remington; grand dogs Chuy and Bluey; brothers Craig Thayer, Christopher (Maria) Thayer, David Thayer, Robert (Lisa) Thayer, and Roger (Elisabeth) Thayer; and many cherished nieces, nephews, and dear friends.
He was predeceased by his parents, G. Robert and Rosalie Thayer and his sister-in-law, Cecilia.
The family invites you to celebrate Darrell’s life on Tuesday, February 24, 2026, at Saginaw Valley United Pentecostal Church, 7877 Bell Road, Birch Run, MI. Visitation will be held from 11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. and 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m., followed by the homegoing celebration service at 6:00 p.m. At the request of the family, floral arrangements may be made through Grohman’s Florist. A private burial will take place on Wednesday, February 25, 2026. Funeral arrangements entrusted to W. L. Case and Company Funeral Directors.
