Kihwan Shoemaker, of Covington, passed away Monday, October 20, 2025, at the age of 79. Mrs. Shoemaker, a beloved member of the Newton County community, passed away leaving behind a legacy of kindness, hard work, and generosity. Born in Korea and raised in extreme poverty, she overcame many struggles to build a better life through perseverance and faith.
A talented seamstress, she worked for Belk and also devoted countless hours to serving others through the Newton County Clothing Bank. Mrs. Shoemaker never met a stranger—her warmth, compassion, and selflessness touched everyone she encountered. She was a devoted member of St. Augustine Church, where her faith guided her lifelong commitment to helping those in need.
She cherished her family above all and will be remembered for her loving heart, tireless spirit, and the many lives she brightened through her giving nature.
She was preceded in death by her parents.
Survivors include her husband, Joe Shoemaker; daughters, Jeannie Tiede (Chris), Jean Hammond (Robert); son, Frank Shoemaker (Marci); grandchildren, Garrett Shoemaker, Kendall Shoemaker, Kristen Tiede, Lauren Tiede, Maya Hammond, Laina Hammond.
A Funeral Mass for Mrs. Shoemaker will be held Thursday, October 30, 2025, 2:00 P.M., at St. Augustine’s Catholic Church, 11524 Highway 278, in Covington, with Rev. Mario Lopez officiating. Friends are invited to visit with the family Thursday, October 30, from 10:30 A.M. - 12:00 P.M., at Caldwell & Cowan Funeral Home, 1215 Access Road, in Covington.
