March 19, 1960 – August 21, 2025
Kim K. Carls, age 65 of Tecumseh MI, died Thursday, August 21, 2025, at Trinity Health Ann Arbor.
Funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. on Friday, August 29, 2025 at the Mumford-Hudson Funeral Home, burial will follow in Oregon Twp Cemetery. The family will receive visitors on Friday, August 29, 2025, from noon until the time of his service at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the American Heart Association 3816 Paysphere Circle Chicago, IL 60674-0001 or Reigning Cat and Dog Rescue, 545 S 300 East, LaGrange IN 46761 or https://venmo.com/Reigningcatanddogsrescue, where we adopted our sweet Indie from, just over 1 year ago.
Kim was born in Flint, MI, on March 19, 1960, to Robert, Sr. & Betty (Seames) Carls. He was a 1978 Graduate of LakeVille Memorial High School. He married Sandra Smith on April 24, 1982, at Columbiaville United Methodist Church. Kim was employed at the Lapeer County Press from 1978-1979. He began his employment as a Resident Care Aide with the State of Michigan on June 10, 1979, at Oakdale Center for the Developmentally Disabled in Lapeer. Over the course of his employment, he also worked at Caro Regional Center, Kalamazoo Regional Psychiatric Hospital, Huron Valley Center, Ypsilanti and retired from the Center for Forensic Psychiatry in Ypsilanti, as a Forensic Security Aide on April 1, 2016. He was a voice of calmness in stressful situations that could arise during the workday, using his words to de-escalate a situation. Kim was a generous, kind and quiet person. He took great pride in planting, tending to & finally harvesting his vegetable garden every year. He planted enough to share with many others. His specialty was canning salsa & later spaghetti sauce after a former co-worker introduced him to that process. Kim also enjoyed photography. He was the unofficial photographer at many family events. He particularly enjoyed gathering nieces and nephews together, posing them & taking many pictures. Many memories were made by Uncle Kim. He enjoyed traveling to visit family out of state and after he retired an annual family canning event took place in Georgia for many years. You can't live and work in the vicinity of Ann Arbor and not become a U of M fan Kim enjoyed watching the Wolverines, especially that past couple seasons. He also was a Detroit Tigers and Detroit Lions fan, maybe this will be the big year for both teams.
He is survived by his wife, Sandy; brothers: Bob, Jr. (Nancy) Carls, Jeff, Sr. (Linda) Carls and Mike (Tammy) Carls; sister, Jill (Larry) Green; brother-in-law Steve (Cathy) Smith, mother-in-law Joanne Smith; nephews: Bob III (Sara Hawkins) Carls, Todd Carls, Jeff Carls, Jr., Jon (Madison) Green and Kyle (Meagan) Smith; nieces: Jamie (Brady) Henson, Christina (Kyle) Blankenship, Kristin (Joe) Hendricks, Jessica (Tyler) Ferrier, Amanda Carls and Shelby (Chase) Kysar.16 great nieces and nephews, aunt: Susan (John) Brown, special neighbors/adopted family: Chris, Stacey, Charlette & Mason Kleinow, many cousins and his beloved dogs, Petey and Indie. He was preceded in death by his parents, sister Julie Plessinger and father-in-law Gerald Smith. Many thanks to the staff of the Surgical ICU-2 East and Cardiac ICU 6 North at Trinity Health/St Joe's Hospital Ann Arbor for the care and compassion they provided to Kim during the 7 weeks and 2 days he spent there.
