Kimberly Marguerite Cameron, 66, died on December 14th, 2024, at home in the presence of her children. She was born on January 22, 1958, in Smithfield, North Carolina, to the late Hilma Smith Cameron and Jack Kearns Cameron. In addition to her parents, she is preceded in her death by her son, Channing Dale Wheeless, and brother Jon Preston Cameron.
Kimberly’s passion in life was caring for her children and rearing them with strong Cameron values. Within the vault of always and never was instruction on a proper handshake, direction for dinner table etiquette, and strong opinions on the dos and don’ts of fashion. Never to be left out is the pledge of unfaltering allegiance to the North Carolina State University Wolfpack and Duke University Blue Devils. Among her various hobbies, one of her favorites was to watch college football and basketball—particularly basketball and particularly during the NCAA tournament— giving the phrase “Cameron Crazy” a whole new meaning. Ma to her children, Nonee to her grandchildren, and Miss Kim to anyone else, she left a meaningful impact on everyone she encountered. To her children and her children’s friends, she is remembered for having created a safe place to be themselves and to feel loved and protected as one of her own. To her own friends, she is remembered for her charm, her pride, and her energetic disposition. Queen of shenanigans, purveyor of a good time, and ever enigmatic, she never left a person without a story beginning with, “Remember that one time with Kim?”
Kimberly is survived by her son, Cameron Smith Wheeless and wife, Christina; daughter, Mary-Elizabeth Blair Ledford; son, Michael Foster Ledford (Jr.); granddaughter, Bridget Nicole Wheeless; grandson, Cameron Smith Wheeless (II); sister, Sharon Cameron Tippetts and husband, Eli; sister, Elizabeth Cameron Berrett and husband, Dennis; brother, C. Smith Cameron and wife, Michelle; sister, Jennifer Cameron Casey and daughter, Catherine Casey McKnight; miniature dachshund, Cookie Cameron; and numerous nieces, nephews, and extended family members.
Kimberly will be laid to rest on December 28, 2024 at 1 p.m. at Gatlin Cemetery in Ardmore, Alabama.
