Donald Kip Hakanson passed away on June 6, 2025 in Provo, UT. He was husband to the late Beth Miller Hakanson, is survived by his sons Justin, Jake, and Ben, and his grandsons Phineas, Gideon and Hamish.
He was born in La Grande, Oregon to Milt and Nona Hakanson, the first of four children. He graduated from the Naval Academy (Go Navy, Beat Army!) in Annapolis where he met his future wife. While stationed in San Diego, California as an Officer on a Cruiser they had their first two children, Justin and Jake. After the completion of his Naval service, he continued his education at Oregon University (Go Ducks!) where he received his MBA in finance. He then returned to Portland, Oregon (Go Blazers!) where he had grown up and Ben was born. After a few years in Portland he finally settled down with his family in Orem, Utah (sorry, not a Jazz fan) where he lived out the rest of his life. He loved his family and gave everything he could to them.
Kip had a love of sports! He professionally officiated basketball, volleyball, and baseball for High Schools, Colleges, and the Public sports leagues, so he never let his boys boo the refs (but now we can). He also coached many of his sons' teams. In his later years, he joined the slowpitch softball community, where he enjoyed playing with his sons and making new friends, while showing off his blazing speed. He is a fan of OSU Beavers, Portland Trailblazers, San Francisco Giants, Baltimore Orioles, Navy, and Oregon Ducks. Kip enjoyed games of all sorts, especially card games.
Kip was a dedicated member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, serving in the bishopric of three wards in Oregon and Utah. He was a leader in the Church and always brought a love, calm, and joy wherever he was. His service didn't end in the Navy, he continued serving lovingly to everyone that he met throughout his life. He will be missed by his many friends and family.
Funeral services will be June 16, 2025, 11 a.m., at the Orem Utah Sharon Stake Center, 545 South 800 East, Orem, UT.
There will be a viewing for the public on Sunday June 15 from 6-8 p.m. at Walker Sanderson Funeral Home at 600 E 800 N Orem, UT.

So sorry to hear of Kip's passing! I was his roommate at the Naval Academy, and was really shocked to hear that he had passed away since I had just talked to him on the phone a few days before his passing. All of our classmates at the Academy were saddened by this news. He was a great guy and he will be sorely missed by all of us. Our condolences and prayers are with all the remaining family. May God bless you all. ..Jerry Erickson and the 32nd Company of the USNA class of 1971.
