EVELYN M. KITTNER, 98, of Verona, PA, died Monday, October 17, 2022, at Longwood at Oakmont Senior Care. She had been in declining health for several years. As a child, she enjoyed a variety of activities at her father's summer cottage near Butler, NJ, including swimming, rowing, and hiking. She was the first in her family to attend college and graduated from Wellesley in 1945. Upon her graduation, she worked for IBM training returning service men on that new phenomenon, the computer, but she lost her job when she got married, a fact that she always considered an injustice. During her active years, she enjoyed United Methodist Women's activities, at her churches in Morristown NJ, Wilkinsburg, PA, and Oakmont, PA. She had been for many years a Sunday School teacher at the Morristown United Methodist Church, a Girl Scout Leader, and school trip chaperone and is remembered fondly by many of the friends of her son and daughter. She was a talented seamstress, designing and creating costumes for pageants and church events. She wrote two histories of the Morristown United Methodist Church, focusing on the 1971 fire that destroyed the old structure. She worked for many years as a bookkeeper and at the United Methodist Archives at Drew University. She also participated in a church-sponsored trip to Ukraine in 1995. Upon moving to Pittsburgh in 1999, she volunteered at the Heinz History Center creating finding tools for the library and archive and spent many hours at Wilkinsburg Community Ministry, a food pantry. She enjoyed counted cross-stitch and puzzling. In her many activities, she acquired life-long friends of all generations. She was born in Jersey City, NJ, January 12, 1924, to Paul G. and Lillian R. (Goedecker) Boise. She was preceded in death by both her parents in 1979 and 1996; a younger sister, Audrey L. Boise, in 2021; and her husband of 44 years, John W. Kittner, in 1990. She was the loving mother of Paul J. Kittner (Joann) of Middletown, NJ, and Ruth A. Kittner, of Wilkinsburg, PA; grandma of Paul, Jr., Holmdel, NJ, and g-ma (great-grandma) of Derek Kittner. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial contributions to the Wilkinsburg Community Ministry, 702 Wood Street, Pittsburgh, PA 15221; or the United Methodist Women "Women of Faith" Endowment Fund at 475 Riverside Drive, 15th Floor, New York, NY 10115. The family will hold a memorial service on November 5, 2022, at 4 p.m. at the Longwood at Oakmont Chapel, 500 Route 909, Verona, PA 15147. Arrangements entrusted to BURKET-TRUBY FUNERAL HOME CREMATION & ALTERNATIVE SERVICES, INC., Oakmont.
