Then, in 1963, Uncle Sam pulled his number and asked him to join the Army. He fulfilled his required service in September of 1965. After returning from the service, he worked for a local farmer for a short time. On May 7, 1966, Larry was united in marriage to Lorraine Lingel, and soon after began a 36-year career with the Newman Grove School.
After retiring from school, he worked part time for the city, then worked for Tom Bagley doing pest control. Larry loved working with Tom and seeing the farms. He especially loved their trips to Yankton to spray and get ice cream! Larry was a member of the Newman Grove Rescue Unit for 36 years, Newman Grove Fire Department for 25 years, the American Legion Post #73, and was a part of the Civil Defense.
Larry never met a stranger. He often left family waiting for him while he made a new friend. Larry was a wonderful father and grandfather. He loved his family very much.
He is survived by his wife, Lorraine of Newman Grove, Neb.; children, Rhonda (Yancey) Cortner of Newman Grove, Neb. and Matthew (Crystal) Ashby of Newman Grove, Neb.; grandchildren, Shane (Mckayla) Cortner, Bayonna, Rystin Ashby and Ava Daro; great-grandchildren, Faye and Amara Cortner; sister, Linda (Jim) Scheffler of St. Edward, Neb.; as well as other relatives and friends.
Preceding him in death was son, Timothy Ashby; his parents, Roy H. and Lucille Ashby; sisters, Patricia (Harry) Dreifurst and Velma (Donald Dreifurst) Schupe; and brothers, Lyle Ashby and Gary Ashby.
He will be missed by countless friends and the community of Newman Grove. Unless someone picks up where he left off, the squirrels and birds that he loved feeding will also miss Larry.
