On May 7, 1943, Larry Allen was born to Foster and Phyllis Barker in Glenwood Springs, Colorado. He married Marian Gray on March 18, 1978, in Las Cruces, New Mexico. Larry is a graduate of Dolores High School in Colorado. The day after his high school graduation, he enlisted in the Army. He served from 1961 to 1963 and then four more years in the Army Reserves. While in the Army he played football for the 5th Army Division at Fort Sill, Oklahoma. After his military service, he majored in physical education and played football at Adams State College in Alamosa, Colorado. He then attended Texas Tech in Lubbock, Texas. His coaching career started in Colorado and worked its way to Texas. In Texas, he coached at Amhearst, Shallowater, Lubbock ISD, and Texas Tech where he taught exercise and sports science. After retiring from his coaching career, golf became his passion, winning several partnerships and individual tournaments. His most memorable golf victory included winning the 2020 T-Par-T Golf Tournament at Lubbock Country Club with his partner Donny Stelzer. This tournament turned out to be his last.

He is survived by his wife, Marian Barker; siblings, Jim Barker and Carolyn Barker; sisters-in-law, Linda Barker and Charlene Barker; nephew Wally (Mari) Barker, great-niece, Alex Barker; niece, Tracy Agrafus (Publio); and special friends, Donny Stelzer and Jim Stephens.

TUEY RANKIN

April 28, 2022

Marian,

Larry left a great legacy. I remember him as always being helpful and kind. When I became the Monterey golf coach he was such a big help to me in many areas. He impacted countless lives as a coach at all of his different stops. It was obvious he truly cared about kids. May God wrap his arms around you and comfort you and in time you will have all of the great memories in your heart forever.

Sincerely,

Tuey Rankin
