Larry Cogan Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by New Horizon Funeral Chapel and Cremation on Jan. 22, 2026.
Larry Carlisle Cogan, 86, of Melbourne, Florida, passed away peacefully on January 21, 2026. A devoted husband, stepfather, and patriot, Larry will be remembered for his deep love of country, his loyalty to friends, and his generous spirit.

Born on October 30, 1939, in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, Larry was the son of the late Clair Hendricks Cogan and Mary Catherine Cogan. He graduated from Indiana University of Pennsylvania in 1961 with a Bachelor of Science degree. Shortly thereafter, he answered the call to serve, joining the U.S. Army in 1962. Over a distinguished twenty-year career, he rose to the rank of Lieutenant Colonel (O-5) before retiring in 1982.

Larry's military accomplishments were both remarkable and historic. He flew missions during the Bay of Pigs, served two tours in Vietnam, and acted as Executive Officer of the famed Polar Bears Battalion. He was instrumental in research and development for the Army's latest helicopters and even flew over the Martin Luther King Jr. Civil Rights March, a moment that deeply moved him. After retirement, he delighted in participating in airshows, continuing to share his love of aviation with others.

Beyond his service, Larry found joy in the simple and mechanical pleasures of life-boating, camping, collecting old cars, and restoring antique radios. He cherished time with his wife, Jody L. Cogan, and cared deeply for his extended family. His warmth extended to his stepchildren and step-grandchildren: Paul Emerson Gregg (with Valerie and Emerson), Jenna Blackburn (Richard Blackburn, Dillon Sneed, Shane Sneed, and Anthony Gore), and Sharon Miles (Lauren Miles). He also held a special affection for his mother-in-law, Doris Vaughan, who continues to live vibrantly at 102 years old.

Larry lived a life defined by service, curiosity, and compassion. He will be forever missed and fondly remembered by all who knew him.

Hello,
I met Larry in April 1991 when I visited my cousin Karen Weichman in Melbourne, Florida (his wife at the time) and spent a few days at Karen and Larry's house. My name is Franz Bertram Voß (called Berti Voß), and a brother of my great-great-grandfather emigrated from Germany to the USA in the 19th century. Karen's grandfather and my grandmother were first cousins.
Larry was a very attentive and polite host. He showed us the beauty of Melbourne in his old Ford Model T, took us on a tour in his boat, and told us many stories from his impressive life. He was very interested in us and the German perspective, so we also discussed current events and politics. For me and us as 18-year-old Germans who were in the "wide world" for the first time, meeting Larry enriched our lives. We are still very close to his wife at the time and our cousin Karen!
I will include Larry and his loved ones in my prayers!
