Larry Bernard Fields was born on March 30, 1955, in Columbus, Ohio, to Odell Bernard Fields and Romele Fields. Raised in Newark, New Jersey, he attended Barringer High School, where he developed a strong loyalty to those around him. In 1978, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy, serving for three and a half years as an Electrical/Mechanical Equipment Repairman. After his military service, Larry worked as a Postman for the U.S. Postal Service in California and New Jersey. Later in life, Larry served as a Minister and Drug Counselor for Teen Challenge.

Larry’s greatest legacy is the family he cherished deeply. He was a father who embodied unconditional love, offering guidance with a firm but gentle hand. As the eldest of 19 siblings, Larry’s sense of responsibility and loyalty extended far beyond his immediate family. He was as direct with his siblings as he was with everyone else, holding them accountable with tough love and always ensuring they knew where they stood. His no-nonsense attitude made him a force to be reckoned with, but his loyalty and care for his siblings never wavered, making him a pillar of both strength and honesty in their lives.

A man of integrity and immense strength, Larry was always present for those in need, yet never tolerated foolishness. His passion for life was evident in his love for basketball and music, especially the drums. A natural problem-solver, he took pride in working with his hands, tackling challenges with practical solutions and determination.

Larry’s role as a father and grandfather brought him the most joy. His grandchildren were the light of his life, and he spent many summers in Charlotte, creating lasting memories with them. His legacy of love, kindness, and strength will forever live on in the hearts of those who knew him.

He was preceded in death by his father Odell Bernard Fields, and son Altereck Rashad Shields. He leaves to cherish his memories his children; Terra Shields, Mericha Shields, Jessica Fields, Larresha Fields, Larry Fields Jr., Willie Fields, and Emmanuel Fields; grandchildren Marquese Steward Jr., Ashauni Fields, Amauni Fields, Lael Malachi, Willie Fields Jr., Williya Fields, Kamari Fields, Elena Fields, Kishan Shields, Brandon White, Ikeriah Shields, Donnell Alexander Jr., Tyre Mason, Mekeiha Robinson, Denerio Robinson Jr.,De’Ryan Robinson, Myheir Shields, Hassan Shields, & Hadiyah Shields; his mother Romele Fields; his siblings Maurice Fields (Kay), Ronnie Fields (Judy), Darlene Fields, Kevin Fields, Jeffrey Fields (Elizabeth), Jerome Fields (YaSheka), Romele Fields (Reggie), Donald Fields, Cristal Alexander (Barry), Deborah Chavis (Anthony), Laura Narvaez, Mike Chavis, Earl Chavis, Almalik Amir, Cynthia Chavis, Frederick Glenn, Teresa Wilson, & Tiffany Chavis, as well as a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends.
